Can't afford a South Bend, who else is good up to 350HP? Can the NV-4500 5th gear nut be tightened back up without removing the trans?

I will be honest with you... Save up and buy a Southbend. . If you ever have problems, Peter will stand behind his clutches like no other clutch manufacturer. . You can go another way, but remember- you get what you pay for, and I am sure other people will back me up. Call Peter and tell him what you are wanting to do, and he will be able to tell you which clutch is the right one for your application. . Good luck, and just keep what I said in mind!!

You can tighten the nut with the trans in, I just retightened one in my brothers truck. But it will just come loose again if you don't change something, it came off the first time for a reason ;) read here for a great explanation of the reasons for the nut loosening: Why Stock and Full Spline NV4500 Mainshafts Fail

On my brothers we just welded the nut  that should hold until his finances alow a more proper repair ;)

C. Harlan is right, just save your pennies for the SBC clutch. Something to hold 350hp shouldnt be very much money anyway, especially coming from SBC, for the product they put out, their prices are extremely reasonable.

Just keep saving your money. You'll end up paying more in the long run by having to pay twice after your el cheapo clutch ends up slipping worse than the worn stocker you just removed. You shouldn't go cheap on a clutch.
