We got everything torn apart on the 96. No wonder it would not move. The rivets holding the hub were torn out of the disc. I read on the disc or pressure plate that it was a Luk clutch. I am guessing this is a replacement clutch and pads on disc were about worn down to rivets. This truck has 170,000 miles on it. I suppose this truck could be on the second clutch, depending on how the previous drivers treated it. Should I be checking out condition of transmission, since it is sitting on the ground? I need to install the bigger input shaft for the Southbend dual disc. Going to replace seals, but did not know about syncronizers. How many miles are the NV4500 normally good for? I know about the 5th gear nut, but do not have any knowledge if this has been done. Any thoughts? Thanks.

JD,

I just had my transmission out last summer and I upgraded it with the complete "Silver" rebuild option from Quad 4X4. A little expensive cause I got the optional tools(if you don't have them or access to them, get them!) and manual but was worth it. I even got the new top cover of the transmission. The Luk was most likely the original. The first time I did mine the throw out bearing was trashed and it had a Luk. When you get the southbend, also get the optional flywheel bearing and have a REPUTABLE machine shop machine the fly wheel and install it. I didn't the first time I replaced my clutch and when I rebuilt the transmission last summer, I had that done and it was worth it. When I put my 13 OFE in I didn't do a thing to the transmission. The pilot bearing was real tight when it went back in and that caused some difficulties as mentioned above but the flywheel bearing fixed that. Hope this helps.

P. S. Quad 4X4's service is as good as Southbends and Geno's. Second to none and a real pleasure to work with!

Alignment

While it is apart, verify the alignment of the bell housing. If it is off center or at an angle to the engine, clutch discs get torn apart. Check the shop manual for the bell housing alignment inspection procedure. Your engine adaptor must have 2 dowel sleeves in it to align the bell housing and both the dowels and matching holes must be in good shape, not damaged from previous installation. Other sources of damper failures include lugging the engine (too tall of a gear for the road speed) and miss firing injectors, power, power, power, power THUD, power etc.

Can you post a picture of the disc?
