Well it looks like my BRT (big red truck) needs to go in for some transmission work (see the NV5600 Problem thread).

Question:

If I have to replace the clutch, I think it makes sense to go aftermarket.

I don't plan to do any extreme engine upgrades, maybe an EZ or 275 injectors once I'm out of warranty (next spring). Most on this sight rave about Southbend clutches.

Since the dealer probably won't want to install an aftermarket clutch, I figure I'll have to take it to an independant or a transmission shop.

My thought is to query the shop (since I have no relationship with any non-dealer mechanics) to see if the know anything about Southbend clutch and the NV5600.

Is this a good plan?

Your dealer should be fine with installing an aftermarket clutch. My nv5600 decided to blow up a while back (bear broke and got munched up in it) and when the dealer replaced it I had them put a SB clutch in. They charged me labor for removing and surfacing the flywheel, but no additional labor since they already had everything apart.

It's been a great clutch so far (about 40K on it).

I had around 59K on the transmission when it died. It was always cranky from day one (very hard to get into 1st , 2nd, Rev. from a stop). Thankfully I had an extended warrantee - a new transmission would have costs some big $$$$.

I also had mine installed at the dealer. They charged way too much money though.

The advice I got was have the dealer order it from Southbend, or whatever brand you choose, that way they will back the installation. If you walk in with the clutch in your hand, you wont have the backing.

Make sure you get the labor quote in writing. <y dealer quoted me a labor rate for a 2wd truck, then charged me the 4wd price, and said "sorry we didnt know you had a 4wd!". It cost me almost 200 bucks more. At least I feel like it was installed by someone that knows the truck.
