They have made these trucks too quiet. I am hearing everything. Does anyone else get some throw-out bearing noise in between gear shifts? I here it at every up shift. Twice I have had to push the clutch in a couple of times at idle at a light to stop the noise. I never heard this in the 01 H. O... . but I don't think it would have been possible... . CJ

YES, I COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER, THE TECH GREASED THE SLIDERS ON THE ADJUSTABLE PEDALS TO QUIET THE VIBRATION. IT HELPED A LTTLE BUT IT'S STILL THERE. THEY SAY THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. TBOB

Mine has the noise too as do many others with the HO six speed. It is normal.

Sometimes I can have the clutch out, transmission in neutral while stopped, and the noise is quite loud. Other times I do the same thing and there is no noise. On another note, I have also got a weird thing that is associated with the transmission in that when in 3rd gear and accelerating, I can push up or pull down on the shift lever very slightly, and the lever moves fore and aft about an inch. This only happens in 3rd gear! Anyone else experience this?

If I don't rev it up high enough before shifting, I get that "dropping" sound when let the clutch out. My buddy has it too, so I think it's normal.

Interesting thing happened this weekend though. Took the family to the snow up in the mountains, and while up there I would hear a loud pop come from the clutch pedal when I first pushed on it. Did it the whole time I was up there. ****** me off, I thought something came loose. When I got back to the valley (a sunny 65 degrees) the sound went away.

Do you guys who drive in the snow all the time hear this noise every day? It would drive me nuts!

Another quick Q. This is my first manual, so I have no idea if this is normal- while driving down the road, my 4WD lever moves fore and aft during RPM changes. Is that normal? All I know is, my electronic buttons in my past vehicles never moved like this :D

I went to the dealer today to get my plates and talked to the Service Mgr. about the noise. He said it IS an issue. He has several customers complaining. They have clutches on order to try to fix it. He said the clutch is all new for this year. He said one truck is very loud. The noise can be heard over the engine while idling in neutral. I guess time will tell... CJ

CLUTCH

I PULLED 5ER YEATERDAY, CLUTCH CHATTERS STARTING OUT IN 1ST GEAR OR REV. ALSO AFTER CLUTCH IS ENGAGED AND ACCELERATING IN 1ST OR 2ND GEAR THERE IS A VIBRATION THAT CAN BE FELT IN THE SEAT, THE MIRRORS SHAKE AND THE GEAR SHIFT SHAKES. ONLY WITH THE 15K 5ER IN TOW. WENT BY THE DEALER, FOR THE MECH TO SEE. THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO PULL THE CLUTCH MONDAY. TBOB 6SPD DUALLY 4X2.

THE DEALER PULLED THE CLUTCH TODAY AND FOUND BURN MARKS ON FLY WHEEL. I'M REAL EASY ON THINGS, SO I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT HAPPENED. NEW CLUTCH AND RESURFACE THE FLY WHEEL. IT WILL BE DONE TOMORROW. THEN BACK TO THE 5ER TO SEE IF IT'S ANY BETTER. TBOB

1-14-03 NEW CLUTCH IS OK, PULLED 5ER IT WORKED FINE. I SAW THE OLD PRESSURE PLATE AND DISC. THE PRESSURE PLATE HAD THREE BURN MARKS 120 DEG APART AND THE DISC LOOKED LIKE IT WAS ONLY GRABBING THE OUTER EDGE.

THE VIBRATION AFTER CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT IS STILL THERE, LIKE SOMEBODY IS SHAKING THE DRIVE LINE, MOST 1ST AND 2ND GEAR. I MAY HAVE TO TRY TRACTION BARS AGAIN. TBOB

My clutch makes the same noise, but only sometimes. When the noise is there, it is very loud, and can be heard above the engine noise. Also when in 3rd gear and accelerating, when a little forward pressure is applied on the shift lever, the lever moves for and aft about 3/4 of an inch. Does anyone else experience this?

Wayne I have not checked by shift lever for what yours is doing but the next time I drive it I will. Only thing I have noticed far now is the noise. When I first got it it did not make the noise got about 97?? on it now. Somethings not quite right.

Clang-clang-clang!

My dealer set up an appointment with the local Dist. Mgr. for Chrysler on the 21st of this month... I'll keep you-all posted as to what I find out at that meeting... . (Regarding the transmission/clutch noise)

It's driving me nuts... that's for sure!

clutch nooise noise and chatter

UPDATE; 1-15-03 CLUTCH NOISE AND CHATTER ARE FIXED WITH A NEW CLUTCH, SEE PREVIOUS POST. WE ARE NOW WORKING ON DRIVE LINE VIBRATION WHEN LOADED IE; 5ER ON BOARD. DEALER MECH CHECKED DRIVE LINE ANGLE EMPTY AND TRIED TO CHECK IT LOADED, NOT ENOUGH ROOM. SO I SET THE BRAKES ON THE 5ER AND LET OUT THE CLUTCH IN 1ST GEAR. THE MECH SAID THE FRONT OF THE DIFF WENT UP ABOUT 2", DRIVE LINE ANGLE BIG CHANGE. WE WILL BE INSERTING DEGREE SHIMS NEXT WEEK. THE VIBRATION IS MOSTLY IN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR ACCELERATING. ARE THERE ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS? I TALKED WITH THE DODGE SHOW PEOPLE AT THE DENVER STOCK SHOW, WHO ALL PULL HEAVY TRAILERS, THEY SAID THEY HAVE NO PROBLEMS. TBOB

Heard mine today for the first time at about 800 miles. It's the 6-speed mainshaft, not the clutch.

Happens when the truck is in neutral, the pressure plate is engaged, and the transmission mainshaft is spinning. No noise difference with light pressure on the pedal, so it is not the throw-out. Can't be the pilot bearing since the mainshaft is locked to the flywheel and pressure plate.

So, it has to be the mainshaft bearings. Pushing in on the clutch releases the disc and shaft, and the noise winds down.

Now I know the transmission oil level is good, so..... kind of surprising NV gear would have this issue in the third year of production.

But it does change in level, even one push in on the clutch can result in less noise when you let it out and the transmission spins again.

I'm going to give it a little time.

It's true. These trucks ARE too quiet!

Hey, folks- here's a thought:

The Frankster wrote on 01-16-2003 01:04 AM:

What about the "SPLINE" where the clutch attaches to the main-shaft??? What if there is a TOLERANCE problem and the clutch hammers the spline at Idle speed due to frequency and such?

That is a possibility!

It could certainly be one explaination why the previously quiet NV 5600 mainshaft seems noisy, especially if NV made no bearing changes and we know the clutch assembly is new.

And also how the sound could change if you push in the clutch and let it back out (slightly repositioning the clutch disc on the splines).

Not a typical problem..... the sound is so much like a noisy bearing, but if they are changing discs and plates and the sound is gone... ... well, that would be the only answer.

Could be "new" stuff got us again. And to think I avoided the 48RE because it was new.

Good idea.

NTENNA,

I appreciate your comments... thanks! Just to let everyone know: I've had 2 new trannys installed in this truck and the sound has not changed.

(Original transmission did it... replacement #1 did it and replacement #2 does it)

I think it's safe to start ruling out the transmission itself and start exploring the tolerances on the main-shaft / clutch if you ask me! Anyone have any pull in the STATE of WASHINGTON with the CHRYSLER people to start looking into this???

I spoke to my dealer again today about it. The customer's whose was very loud was fixed with a complete clutch change. He has offered me the same... for what that is worth. He is ordering the parts... . CJ
