I have a South Bend Clutch and hydraulic assembly. Every morning I have to hold the key on and move the clutch pedal up or down to get the starter to engage. There is only about an 1/8 inch where the starter will engage.

I have tried adjusting it. Does anyone know how the clutch switch works. Can it be repaired or cleaned or.....

Dennis

Unplug the switch and put a jumper across the wire that plugs into the switch and then you don't need to push the clutch in to start. Yes this bypasses the "Ralph Nader" saftey swith.

I had some issues with my clutch safety switch, took it apart and cleaned it, put it back together and all is good. Sometimes it can get misaligned on the rod, you might want to work it back and forth and make sure it is running on the rod correctly.

While I had all that apart, I tapped a wire off each of the two wires and ran them to a momentary push switch that I mouted on the dash, if for whatever reason my switch goes goofy again, I can just pusk the switch to have the same effect that the stock swith does, it makes ground and allows a completion to the starter. If you jump those wires, you effectively loose the safety aspect of the switch, you'd have to be anal about making sure you are out of gear when you start your truck, and if others drive your truck, this could be a problem. Nothing like hitting the starter without the clutch depressed and starting your truck in gear . . all but soil your pants, and whoa be it to whatever you might run over because this can happen.

Plus, after starting your truck, the switch circuit goes open, it is involved in your cruise control system, some have jumped the switch and had problems with their cruise control.

Thanks for the replies

I'll have to tear it apart this weekend and see what I can find.

Thanks again.

I disabled mine. You have to warn other drivers, had a kid start it in gear and watched it idle slowly spinning the rear tires while he paniced and was standing on the brakes. He finally turned the key off. When I walked up to him his was clearly shaken, said he didn't know it was a stick!

Rule number one of truck safety: every truck is in gear.
Rule number two: Never point the truck at anything you don't want to destroy
Rule number three: never bring a car to a truckfight
Rule number four: never allow children unsupervised access to your truck
