I am trying to diagnose a clutch problem on my truck. Unfortunately it is 400 miles away right now. My Dad borrowed the truck after the auto in his truck gave out last week. The problem is that the clutch is not disengaging, therefore it is hard to shift and "kills" engine when it comes to a stop. The service manual does not mention any adjustments. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

well first i would check if the hydraulics are working? do you still have pedal pressure? after that o would pull the slave cylinder off and see if the clutch fork will move?

There are no adjustments to this hydraylic system.

Can you describe any noises associated with this problem?

More info, mileage, clutch history, any circumstances?

Good luck.

There are no noises and the pedal is still firm. The problem came on quick(a couple of days) during mostly highway driving towing a small (1000lbs) trailer. Truck has 180,000 miles but I do not know the history of the clutch, I purchesed it with 135,000, and no issues/abbuse since then. I will have him pull the slave and see if we can get any more info.

I think Bob V got it right. The new hydraulics did not fix the problem, so I pulled the trany and the pilot bearing was mostly gone. The rest of the parts looked fine.

I'm a bit suprized that there were no noises or prior shifting problems associated with this pilot bearing failure?

Since my Dad had the truck out-of-town when it happened I can not say much about any noises. He did say there was an occasional squeek, like a v-belt slipping.
