Ok, here we go! I'm on the edge of doing some serious warrenty voiding bombing. My goal is to make about 400hp but I will probably stay at the 350hp level for a while. I want a clutch that drives and feels like stock and one that will also hold that eventual 400hp, only want to do the clutch once. I know you can't miss with Southbend but I'm having Jannetty Racing do the install and Ted is selling Star clutches, his sales guy said that Ted has been working with them to develop custom clutches for our trucks. It is a kevlar faced clutch that he said will hold 950ft/lbs of tourque. Does anybody here have any experience with these clutches?

In my vast search for clutches, i was told by many in the biz that if kevlar gets to much heat it will turn to ash. Im on my second SB clutch now. If this one dosent work out, will be looking at the mcloed.

Just my few pennies worth!:D

South Bend Con O

The South Bend Con O will hold 400+ HP. It has lighter than stock peddle pressure and is smooth as silk. :D :D It isn't a sled pulling clutch but it has stud up to my HP and 25 runs down the 1/4 mile.

Been there, done that! Southbend is the answer

I have had a Kevlar, grabby, not smooth at all. Kevlar / Ceramic, very grabby, hard to start out without shaking in anything but 1st, always shakes loaded. Full Ceramic, holds very well, excellant for rattling the fillings outta your teeth:D I'll never have a ceramic again. Then I met Southbend. Con FE held extremely well, slightly grabby but no where near what any of the others were. You could feather it just right and have no shake at all. I just installed their Con OFE, holds to 400hp EXTREMELY SMOOTH it feels exactly like a stock clutch. Pedal effort is near stock, maybe less.

I can back a loaded trailer up an incline without shaking the truck at all!! Just as smooth as starting out empty. Try doing that with any other high hp clutch! None I've found anyway.

I'm by no means an expert, but I have tried 7 or 8 different clutches in the last few years and Southbend is by far the best. Plus you absolutely cannot beat them for customer service, you might find an equal, but you won't find anybody better, period.

I had a friend who had a kevlar clutch he liked to abuse his truck he got the clutch VERY hot Lots of times and the most damage he ever did was get the springs hot (borg/beck pressure plate)and they lost there holding pressure so of course the clutch would slip he had a new pressure plate built when he took out the disc it looked brand new it makes me wonder if you have a flywheel that has cracks in it the cracks would act like little knives cutting away the Kevlar but if every thing was smooth how could destroy it?????? any one ever had a kevlar disc behind a Bomb'ed CTD?any one have any input on my thoughts? thanks Jason

Borg & Beck??? Why would you to put one of those clutches in on purpose??? Stay away from kevlar, good for gassers but not diesels...

SouthBend Clutches

I think SouthBends Clutches are the Perfect Clutch for most of the CTD's used as Daily Drivers. . Ths Con OFE and Con FE are Awesome!!. . Kurt (aka-Sparky)

I just put a Con OFE in mine today, it's just great. Feels like stock very smooth engagement with no chatter or grab. Pedal pressure is same which it should be since it looks like a stock pressure plate. The disc was same looking as stock aside from the diffent material. Overall the South Bend is a hell of a deal and I'm glad I did it. Sounds like you'll want the MU 2001 Con FE for your goals to surpass 400hp.

Have to agree with the Con OFE I have close to a 100 miles of in town driving on mine. Will pull the 5x14 with a couple of 4 wheelers this weekend for the first load of any kind on it.
