I have almost 3000 miles on my new 04. 5. And in almost every respect, this truck is far better than my 98. 5 24 valve. But I do notice now that the engine is so quiet, noisy transmission or clutch or clutch bearing noise at times when accelerating, slowing and off the throttle, actually at any time when the transmission and throttle are not in perfect sinc.

I have not approached my dealer about this yet, and was thinking I should find another 6spd to see if this noise is endemic across the fleet.

It is possible this noise is perfectly normal in the 6 speed.

Anybody have any comments or suggestions?

The 6-speed is a pretty noisy transmission, especially when new. It took about 12000 miles for mine to quiet down significantly. Keep in mind it's a really heavy duty unit, so it's going to be a bit louder.

Big manual transmission noise is normal - do a search and you'll find lots of talk about this. It doesn't hurt anything but with the 03's, the dealers installed an updated clutch (warranty) that only sometimes cured it.

Next time you pull up next to a semi truck at a stop light, check out how much noise their transmission makes before they push the clutch in.

HD transmissions were designed to handle power and big loads so the bearings and such were built for durability not quietness. This is just the first truck the diesel has been quiet enough to hear the transmission.

I have a 04 1/2 6spd,when its cold I have a knocking or tapping I can hear coming from under the truck. You can push in the clutch or pull slightly on the shifter and it stops until you release the clutch or let the shifter go back to normal position and the noise returns. You can drive the truck a block and the noise is gone until you park the truck and it cools, then the noise returns. Have checked two other 6 spds 04 1/2 and a 03 no noise when cool. I have 4700 miles on the truck now and love it. ///At 6000 miles took the truck in and the clutch was replaced (weak springs) and the above listed noise is gone. Oo.

Been there, done that. They made a new clutch for my 2004 six months after I got it and I put up with the same rattle you describe. Do a search on my name, JRensel and you will see a large post a few months ago that describes it all. Good luck, and dont put up with it.
