I want to change the exhaust on my 07' and i would love just just have straights from the turbo back, but i am wondering what anyone can let me know about how much i can do regarding the colorado laws.

well it depends on where the vehicle is registered. if you are registered in the denver area, you will have to have an emissions test/inspection every year i think. If your outside of the denver area you can probably get away with anything. i think the law says you are supposed to have a muffler, but i have run mine straight for 2 years and never had any problems. i'm registered in northeastern colorado so i dont have to have any emissions testing.

well, actually now that i start thinking about it, I am out here in the military and my truck is registered in VA. So i guess the laws there are the ones that i need to find out about. Thanks for the reply. This new cummins is just too quiet.

If your talking noise... ... not emissions than you might consider what is happening here in WA... . and other states... . they have passed laws making louder than stock exhaust illegal... ... I've never seen a newer pickup stopped but I've seen them stop and test some of the cars and sight them..... So for what its worth... it depends on your home state and how well they enforce the law... .

Eliminating the cat if a fed. law , and the states are the enforcers .
But the 1st thing you should do is wait till its out of warentee , becouse the dealer may pinch youin multible ways .

it's my understanding that smog laws are going to be repealed in Colorado. My cousin lives in Castle Rock and that is what he says.

I know they look for the presence of a smog device (i. e. catalytic converter), if originally equipped, when they do the emissions testing in Colorado Springs. They don't test it just look to see if one exists.

The main thing is the cat , if it had one , it needs one , as far as I know only the 94 did not have cat new ,
I would wait till off warentee , or ask dealer for there recomendations , thats if you ever want to have them be responsible for any warentee issues ,
I have not seen any mention of a aftermarket performance cat , that dose not mean there isn't one ,

That's crap about the noise laws.

You can by a factory SRT-4 or Z06 that has "loud" exhaust by standards set by say for example your typical Minivan.

But you can't mod your minivan or truck to be louder to match the same level as the SRT-4 or zo6?

In Colorado, if you are in an emissions test area, it does not matter where the vehicle is registered. It still needs to be tested. I ran into this when I was stationed here in the military.

The Gas emissions are changed. But the diesel emissions are still in place for who knows how long. If the vehicle came stock with a cat it must have a cat on it to pass the emissions. If the vehicle came with a resonator. It can be removed because it is not related to emissions.

Have not heard of any noise issues with diesels with loud exhause yet. But the police in the springs area have been issuing tickets for loud exhaust on motorcyles.

Just to let you know, there are noise ordinances in the various small citys in the Denver Metro area. If you are driving through Federal Heights, for instance, their noise ordinance violation includes engaging an engine brake. GregH

Thanks for all the info. What exhaust system would you guys recommend to get a louder truck and still be legal?

I don't think this applys to your truck, but I'm running a 4" MBRP system on mine. It isn't all that loud but my EGTs are lower and the turbo spools really fast. Not sure if it helped performance.

So... say someone (i. e. me) had a bombed 12v in place of a 24v in a 2002 truck... ?
How would one go about getting registered (getting around the emissions testing - ain't gonna happen, even on a good day for this engine).

There are several levels of the law [ different states bring in the same newer laws at different times ] the law that they are going to says that you can not remove or alter the emissions equipment , changing to an older engine , there is a rule for that , the emissions has to conform to the newest yr of truck or eng. , in your case 02 .
