I read about the Coates head several years ago in some type of hot rod magazine. They were testing the heads on a Ford 302 or 351 and were turning some impressive rpm's - somewhere in the neighborhood of 12,000 + rpm :--) and had some impressive HP/tq numbers as well.

With an engine that could turn those kind of numbers, I would get into big trouble :-laf

Dunno if it was the same technology - but some aircraft engines use(d) rotary valves as well - and I'm talking 4 stroke, not 2 stroke...

you would not have to worry about high boost pressure holding a valve open.

think of the retarding pressure you could get if you did not have to worry about floating the valves!

thats cool!

Some dogs or splines on the valves and a mechanism to allow parts of the shaft to slide would make for an easy way to shut off cylinders and make a true J-brake.

The way I understand it they are building replacement motors for different applications already on the road. You would have to send them a message and ask. I do bet it would be for a pretty penny though.
