I went out today and bought an HO Cummins for work use. The PSD is not going anywhere. . this is a new addition. It is a 2500 QC SLT 4X2 with all the stuffings with a LS 3. 54. It is Forest Green with Mist Gray Interior. I don't need a CREWCAB for work so I bought the best engine and mileage combo available.
I need some help in what I need to do first in order to BOMB this thing. Does this truck have that the silencer ring I have heard you guys talking about. What is the best way to get to 325/700. I don't care to exceed the stock clutch limitations at this time. I don't need any Duramax's or PSD's. . (other than mine) out running this thing. Bring on the suggestions, I am ready to begin the process.
First mileage check netted 19. 2 over 188 miles of roughly 80% highway driving. Those of you with this configuration are seeing about what??? Thanks for the help in advance... CJ

Picks of the new truck are a day a way

PSD Picks

CJ... glad to see you have come over to the dark side... hehehe.

As far as not wanting to upgrade your clutch, this is where you need to be careful. A guy here with ETH only added Diesel Dynamics stage3 injectors, and his clutch is slipping badly. Maybe some milder injectors would be OK?

Welcome to the otherside. I agree with Rob. The clutch will not hold up to Bombing. It will pull and work great with the stock configuration. Start with guages and go from there

WELCOME _ CJ!!!!!! bout time you started on the "correct" path (not that the other one was rong) to the POWER on the Dark Side <hehe>... .....

CJ, Just wanted to say HI and Welcome to the "proper" side. I guess this means we WILL have 2 spell PHORD #ad
the "correct" way (FORD) - can't really "razze" a fellow CTD owner, now, can we?? OF COURSE, we can (just not as heavily)... ... ... ..... #ad

Hows bout the sig update, which one you gonna list first (since the Fords about done put the RAM on the top - easier to read the changes (BOMBs)) #ad

Agn WELCOME to the DarkER Side!!!

Congrats on the new truck. I does have the silencer ring, it is in the housing just in front of the turbine. For the power you are looking for, look at the DD 3’s. You may need to do something with the exhaust. I have the Jardine and am happy with it. If you show at the next Big D meeting you can check it out.

Good luck.

Hey CJ, I looked at your PSD picks and was just wondering where you got your Bumpers at, they are mean lookin.

CJ welcome home !!
as to the ring, yes you have it . . take off the rubber hose that connects to the turbo and you see it in the opening of the turbo held in by the snap ring.
as far as the power. . I have DD III's and an Power Edge EZ box that adds fuel and has a boost module plus adds timming. . that alone will over power the clutch and be at 1350° +/- EGT's [saw as high as 1570 on a Ferd run #ad
#ad
] so needed the HX40and 4" exhust to cool things down, now max is 1270°. . note the clutch will slip at will on high torque loads. . need any mor info throw me an E-mail
Gary

CJ, you basically have the same truck I do. I have DD2s and Practical Solutions boost module which works very well and should get you close to the 325/700 you are after. My clutch has held so far.

Mileage on 1st trip looks good, maybe a bit higher than my first tanks. Now it is hard to drop under 20mpg with these injectors on the highway cruising at 80. EGTs are not excessive with stock exhaust but I'd lose the stock filter and snorkel between the filter box and fender soon. I'd lose the stock muffler but hang onto the resonator unless you want it pretty loud.

Happy BOMBing #ad

Hi CJ, I have the exact configuration in LWB form, don't know if yours is long bed or short but that's about the exact mileage I have been getting. The silencer ring won't affect power at all, just add a little noise. I haven't removed mine but I can still hear the turbo quite well. I have the EZ module and that alone is enough to slip the clutch if I romp on it. I have the EZ set to the 2 position to help the clutch a bit.

CobraJet... You said the PSD "won't be going anywhere"... You are probably right I doubt you will want to drive it after a little time behind a Bombed CTD. #ad

If you don't want to upgrade the clutch yet then a set of mild injectors (275's) and a PowerEdge EZ is probably all the power you can use. The ETH clutch will slip alittle but will get you by. I would hold off on big injectors for now as the power increase you get from them requires a better clutch, 4in exhaust, HX4O turbo. You being from the ford camp probably think $$$$$$ when some says INJECTORS... . Cummins 275's are less than $300 for a set of six. And there is always someone that will want them when you are ready to "Get off the porch" and buy the DDIII's or DDVI's? #ad

The PE EZ box seems to work well with add on fueling boxes when you want to turn up the power even more.

Everyone will agree that you should start with Gauges!

GoodLuck! Kwikkurt

Cobra,
If you want more turbo noise + a little more go power, just install a 'K&N' filter in the stock box. About $70. 00 at Kragen Auto parts.

Fact:The First Fords' had 'DODGE' Engines! The new PSD's need them!

Lots of great info guys. Where do I get this stuff?? The EZ box seems to be pretty popular. Do I need the injectors as well??The truck is a long wheel base. What takes the place of the stock filter box and snorkel??. . an open K/N?? The PSD is heavily BOMBED. . chip, exhaust, propane etc. I am looking for mileage and performance out of the Cummins. The PSD is out too lunch in the mileage department, but it gets us all to the RV sites with ease and CREWCAB comfort. The bumpers are www.reunel.com The signature will change tomorrow when I can get some pictures. Chaw... Is the Addison meet the 2nd or 3rd Saturday?

OK CJ, that does it. The administrators are going to have to institute a drug testing policy now! #ad
You feelin' OK? #ad

Well, I guess this isn't a joke, so I have to caution you that you cannot even change the air filter without slipping that clutch. It is the worst pos.

I hope you enjoy your ETH, just get a decent clutch after which you can push 400 horsepower no problem.

Be careful, soon you'll be thinking of reasons to take the Cummins out to play, instead of the Ford.

Come on HVAC... I owned a 93 Cummins. . that is what started the last 8 years of diesel ownership. Two PSD's and now two Cummins. My better half tools around in a Suburban. I guess brand loyalty isn't in my genes. I have always bought the best vehicle which fits my needs. Is the factory clutch that bad?? I need to find out who sells this GO FAST stuff. Now where did my drugs go??... CJ

I believe there's very little BOMBing you'll be able to do without replacing the pathetic stock clutch. The 6 speeds have less lining area than the 5 speeds and it's just enough for the stock output of the engine. I've seen ETH/DEEs, with nothing more than 275s and a VA, which over power the clutch while towing hard. Keeping the RPMs above 2000 will help make the clutch last longer. 325 hp at the rear wheels is quite easy to get but the stock clutch won't hold it for the long run. There are lots of different combinations which can get you to that point. DD2s and an EZ will put you there, and is a popular option. Guages are an absolute must. I like the 275s and EZ combo ($800-$900 and 300 hp at the wheels and in excess of 700 ft/lbs)- the ETHs run well with it and actual fuel milage is better than stock, thoutgh the computer won't be accurate any more. Dyno results and my real world use of 26000 miles say that a K&N and 4" exhaust are a bust from what's gained per the money spent - better to spend the money on an after-market clutch. Keep the turbo silencer in unless you like the noise, and stay away form propane on an ETH.

Bart,
I just got off TST's website. Their products seem pretty nice. How about the 9 position controller which comes with the boost and EGT guages built in for $999. 00?? I will install guages with whatever I purchase. This truck will not tow often. I want the mileage and the room. Where do I purchase the EZ box??. . CJ

COBRAJET:

TST's stuff is great, as is the customer service. I run the 10 level PM, set to "off-road" specs. The power is unbelieveable, but I don't recommend it due to unrealistically high EGTs. TST warned me about this, but I wouldn't listen. Their "regular" spec PM makes great power too. However, if warrantee issues scare you, you might steer clear of the boxes which nick the pump wires like TST and Blue Box. There are other ways to make almost as much power.

If this is the case, I would agree with Evan above, DD-Stage IIs and a DD Boost module, or Practical Solutions Boost Module. Or perhaps Edge Product's EZ, which adds a little fuel, alters timing (for economy), and includes a boost override (module).

Fueling boxes, such the TST, PE, or Blue Box, don't work so well for the ETH because the bang for buck isn't there. The effectiveness of the box goes down depending on injector size until it's not worth anything other than keeping fueling going in the upper rpms. Adding a fueling box to an otherwise stock ETH will get it to 270 to 280 hp.

you can purchase the ez from http://www.edgeproductsinc.com. i have dd2's and the ez and it will put you right at 325hp. my clutch held until propane. if you plan on towing with this the clutch will not hold the dd2's and ez.
