Just pulled a code 483 off a truck i recently purchased, something to do with the fan rationality check. Fan clutch is working as far as i can not rotate more than one time when spun. Now i have only had this truck a few days and i do notice it hardly spins like my 2000 did. Maybe be only 200 rpm at idle.

Any suggestions?

Check the wiring in the area of the a/c compressor. The wiring can rub through, partially shorting the 5v supply circuit, setting the fan codes and the battery temp sensor codes. If you find nothing, go up to the fan. Find where the wires come down out of the clutch, and make sure they are not cut. The wires can get caught in the fan and get cut, and then short to the radiator or frame rail giving the same effect. If the wiring is OK, the most likely problem is a bad fan clutch.

If that does not work give it some more cowbell

I got the 0483 code intermittently for about 50k miles before the fan clutch eventually gave up the ghost. No more codes after replacing the fan clutch.

That is interesting because i did have the battery temp sensor codes also. I just figured the -15 degree last night through that code. I will start following the wires out of the A/C. Am i to assume the when the a/c compressor turns on the clutch is activated?

Does it sound right the fan is really turning resonable slow compaired to rpm's, yet you can not free spin it by hand more than one time.

Thansk for the reply's

My fan always spun slowly when at normal operating temperatures. According to manual, clutch is okay if it turns less than 5 turns when spun by hand.

I had the same code on my '03 my JR said improper fan speed. I changed it out and code went away. A/C started working better too.

Ok i spun tested it today and it appears to be the fan clutch. When cold i had to spin it around a bit and loosen it but after a minute of messing with it it now will pretty much free spin. I started to look online for a part and have had no luck at all, does anyone have a part number for the fan clutch or can suggest someone to call.

Thanks for all the adive.

Edit. i found a link to a Pollard Mopar Parts, when i looked up my truck a 2006 with the manual it shows the clutch to be $297. does that sound right. There is no description or part number. Can someone chime in befor i buy.

If you had P0514 for the Battery this tsb may cure that.

This code did come with the p0514 last week but is now by itself. I have not seen the clutch turn on yet so i am guessing it is bad and i have not seen any wire issues. If i try to turn the clutch when cold it will not free spin but if you hand turn it a few revs it will become loose and free spin. Does this still sound like a clutch to you guys?

Well i am kinda torn on if i should spend the money on the clutch. I can not find a wire issue but i have not seen the clutch turn on but the outside temp here is only getting to 30 deg. The whole free spin deal confuses me, if you go out right now and try to spin it it will not hardly move, but if you turn it a full rev and apparently move the oil a bit you can almost spin it 6 times. When i shut the engine off it free spins for maybe 5 seconds. Does this still sound like a Clutch.

When i turn on the a/c and engine is above 140 deg should the fan clutch pulse on?
