The overhead mpg display now seems to have settled down so perhaps it was the connector.
Guess I'll take a chance on it going home, trailer in tow.

Update from K5IP,
I took a chance and drove it home (1300 miles) and made it OK. But the problem did appear once again during the trip. I tried to buy a sensor from a Cummins dealer along the way but none were in stock. In addition Cummins was not able to source the FCA, fuel control valve. Are these available without buying the whole pump?
Which of these fail most often? Is there any way to determine which is at fault?
How do I reset the 0080 code?

Genos garage has both of those items separately as do other places. You need a Bosch delaer type to get the indivudal pieces. All the fuel system pieces are available in component parts, FCA, COV, rail, PRV, etc.
