A few weeks ago, my 2001 began losing power. It was like the turbo was making no boost or whining. Eventually, the engine light came on. I checked the codes with the ignition, and got P1693, P0234, and P0237. After disconnecting the battery cables, the codes came right back. The boost comes and goes. The light isn't on all the time, and the light is sometimes on when there is boost, and sometimes not on when there isn't. I ordered a boost sensor from Cummins. The new one is smaller, (new part # superceeded the old #) and requires a 1 1/16 instead of a 1 1/4 to install it. Also, the hole on the engine side is smaller. When I called the Dodge dealer (twice as high on the sensor), they stated the new part # required an updated wiring harness. The Cummins dealer said he didn't show that. I unhooked the battery cables, swapped the sensors, the hooked the batteries back up. I am still getting the P1693 and P0237. I assume the P0234 (overboost) will be back. Is the boost sensor the same as the map sensor? If not, do I need to try that next? Also, I haven't checked for a stuck wastegate. Is that a possibility? The boost is still coming and going. I did have a Bullydog Torque Dog on when I first had the boost problem. I thought it went bad so I removed it. The problem remained, and the engine light has been coming on and off ever since the Bullydog was removed.

check for a stuck or sticky waste gate, check IAT sensor and map sensor, any of them could be the problem, if it over boost's it will de fuel and cause that problem. also check all your boost hoses.

Wastegate seems to be working. The problem comes and goes. I replaced the map sensor. I removed and cleaned the IAT sensor and it looked good. I bought a code reader and the only code I'm getting now is 0237. That seems like the map sensor is still bad. I have cleared it and it still comes back. Rubber boots all look good.
 
Just a quick thought.



The only time that I have ever gotten that code was when I was messing around hooking or unhooking a couple of performance boxes that I had. These boxes intercept the MAP voltage going to the ECM, and transmit a modified voltage to the ECM. This is one way the boxes could increase (or decrease) engine performance. By fooling the ECM into thinking that MAP was a certain value that it was not actually at.



I got into trouble, because I left the boxes MAP connections in place while I powered down or unplugged the box. The ECM did not like it and through a code (0237). I never drove the truck during those times so I don't know how it would have performed.



Since you have a boost gauge and I would assume that you have normal boost pressure. I would also assume that your boost would be measured at the air horn or at the manifold by using a boost bolt. If you are getting pressure there, you should be getting pressure in the manifold.



If it were me I would take another look at the MAP sensor or the wiring connections to it. Make sure that only the OEM MAP wiring connection is connected to the MAP sensor. As well as, the general condition of the electrical contacts.

I have replaced the map sensor, cleaned the IAT sensor, checked all connections. I think the wastegate is OK since the problem comes and goes. I have been told when a wastegate sticks, it usually sticks open or closed, not working properly sometimes and sticking sometimes. I lose boost randomly with no apparent event causing it. Yesterday I got on the interstate and had 11 pounds of boost and the truck was a dog. All of a sudden, I go to pass someone, and it takes off with 20 lbs. Exit the interstate and loses the boost as I am on the off ramp. I clear the P0237 code and it just comes right back. Any thoughts? Anyone know the correct cummins part number for the upgraded map sonsor for a 2001? I assume they gave me the right one. The hole is smaller. Also, ever heard of having to use an upgraded wiring harness with the new map? Dodge says yes, cummins says no? IAT looked good, but I cleaned it anyway.
 
Now I got the check engine light to go out, but I expect it to come back on and lose power again at any minute. Now I hear the turbo louder and it sounds like its sucking air so loud it sounds like its coming through the dash. No hoses or boots are off as far as I can tell. Was just about to get under it when it started flooding.

I am still thinking from what you describe that it is the MAP sensor, the connection or the wiring some how. Here is why I think so.



You are throwing the 0237 code. An under boost condition should not cause this code. The code tries to reflect a problem with the MAP sensor. However; the ECM does use this signal. IE the more boost it allows more fueling. So if your MAP signal is "flickering" then it could make the ECM want to puke.



For what you describe the noise in conjunction I am at a loss. Any chance you have an exhaust restriction? My truck has an exhaust brake. The conditions and noises you describe kind of sound like something along the lines when my brake valve is closed. Under throttle it will not build any boost at all and obviously very low power. Opening the brake valve when fueling it takes off hard.

I bought a new MAP sensor recently for my '02 from Hoesli Diesel. It was like yours, smaller and with a adapter wiring harness. The harness had what looked like a coil around it, I'm assuming to filter RF.



Mine runs fine with it, codes cleared.

Hey Jim I was wondering what you did to get rid of that 0237
code after you messed with your programmer with the map sensor connections still connected

You will have better luck getting help if you start a new thread with your specific issue and have a good signature line with your trucks mods included.
