hi everyone

has anyone had there truck just shutdown. i started my 2000 3500-4wd dually it was warming up at idle for about 5 min when i heard it stop like someone turned the key off. i went out and tried to start the truck and it would just crank. i have a fuel pressure gauge and it is reading 13lbs and there is no air in the supply lines. i also checked the the fuses and relays all seem ok. i could not find any thing wrong. any help would be appreciated. i have to leave for baltimore 10/10/07 and won't be back till the 24th so if i don't reply right away that is why. thank you steve

My 2000 shut down "like someone turned the key off " as I accelerated onto a local highway. Fuel pressure was normal. I too had the p1688 - INTERNAL FUEL INJECTION PUMP FAILURE. Your injection pump is likely toast.

Yours may still be under warranty. DaimlerChrysler warranted mine at six years, ten months, twenty-one days/130,737 miles: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/24-valve-engine-transmission-1998-5-2002/171690-has-daimlerchrysler-taken-you-ride.html

Good luck!

i read on a site yesterday that p1688 meant no further diagnosis needed replace the pump. i believe it was midwest injection. robert

Good luck with that pump change. I have done a few and they are okay. Just DO NOT drop the key down into the gear train. Keep key way up(12O'clock). Also I have the pump puller from snap-on. A person could make one no prob. if you need, I can measure mine up and post dimensions.

Another tip on the replacement, you don't have to remove the #6 injector line and the rear engine lifting bracket. You can remove the #6 line and the two that are with it from the back of the inj pump then gently push them toward the block. This will give you enough room to slide the VP44 back and remove it. Worked like a charm when I did mine.

I've had the problem yesterday. Trouble shooting since. Replaced transfer pump. Old pump 4lbs new one 14lbs. I was told once if week transfer pump is left for along amount of time it can wear out the injection pump prematurely. Now suppose there might be some truth to that. Does anyone else have input on this matter?

You should know fairly quickly if you will have problems with you injection pump. When my first lift pump failed and was replaced (under warranty) the injection pump followed within days. DC replaced the injection and well as the lift pump. About 5 years ago, I saw falling fuel pressure on my gauge and replaced the stock lift pump with a FASS DDRP pump. I just replaced it again and still have no issues with the injection pump.
