I have a 2017 Ram 2500, yesterday on my way home from work i got the Service DEF system see dealer message. There was no check engine light. I filled the DEF tank about 3 weeks ago with DEF from Tractor supply, I don't remember what brand. Today I pulled the code P202E. Got any ideas on what the problem is? It was cold yesterday morning when I left for work(9 degrees).

How full did you fill the DEF and how many miles driven since then? If too much is put in and the level is into the filler neck, it will freeze and cause problems. With your 9 degrees, I'd suspect that it was frozen.

It was almost full but not to the F line. Since then I have driven 750 miles or so. Right now it is just below the 3/4 line. Will the message go away if it was just a one time deal because of the cold or will I still need to take it to the dealer?

Well, whatever it was it went away on the drive home. I am just going to assume it was the cold weather yesterday morning that gave it a little glitch.

Probably just caused by the cold. I would just drive and keep an eye on it. The def tank is designed to be full and freeze and get thawed out by the truck and be fine. The tank accommodates expansion unless one was to fill it to the very brim and out of the filler neck into the cap. Otherwise probably just a glitch cell. You should he fine.

That is good news! I need to get it in for the gear shift recall and I will get them to take a look at the code too. For now I will step back from the ledge and not worry about it.

DEF will start to freeze at around 12F. If frozen it will throw a code to service DEF system. The code will clear itself once the DEF has thawed out and is working again. In colder climates the dealer says not to fill past 3/4 in winter because the heater in the tank supposedly can’t put out enough heat to thaw a full tank.

Yep... Happened to me also.... frozen filled it....again went away....

Well it went away on its own, and has not come on again. I guess I will just have to watch out for frozen DEF next winter. Hopefully we will not have anymore mornings that are less than 10 degrees.
