Looking to buy a code scanner to use for my 06 and other ODB-2 vehicle's. What are my options and what is everyone else using?

What do you want to do ?
There many opp. , if you want to do much , then you'll spend $500+ , then theres the problum like every other computor , obsilesnce , up dating , service .
I had the 1st scanner that Snap On made , and others .
You may get a lot of doityourselfers , saying to buy a $100 or less , if you want the abilities of a pro scanner than thats what you have to buy , you can find a $2,000 scanner on Ebay , for about $500 , but there are a lot of cartages , accessorys so you should get someone familure with them to make sure you get what you want .
The next thing is service , the people that do it for a living pay a premim , becouse of the service , [ it may be too much , but if you do it for a living you need it ]
The scanner is a MT 2500 , theres up to a dozen or more cartages ,

I ended up with the Actron Cp9145

MoparDave - I ended up with the Actron CP9145 which I got from Pep Boys for $179, ($199 minus a $20 rebate). I believe they have gone up $20 bucks on the list price however. Check this link:

Of course the Smarty I have works to read and clear codes on My truck just fine. I think if I had gotten the Smarty first I wouldn't need the Actron reader because the only codes I'm reading and clearing is from all the bombing on the truck.

PS - I have used the Actron to clear my neighbors Duramax truck several times and a number of other friends have borrowed it to read and clear codes. Just my 2 cents.

The new can bus communication systems on the new vehicles is just the newest type of computer communication protocal, it is still obd II, but yes you need a scanner that supporst CAN. The new scanners should have it but the older ones no.

Actron scanner can be upgraded

Sorry, I forgot about the 06 CAN stuff. --However, I did go to the Actron site and they state the CP9145 is upgradable. Unfortunately, I don't know what the upgrade specifics are.

See link below.

PS - On further investigation the FAQ section on their site says a download on CD ROM is all it takes.

Bully Dog Triple Dog. It has a built in code reader as do many programmers.

I plan on getting a scanner for my lap-top. The brand i am seriousley considering is auto enginuity, and maybe ease diagnostics. A pc based scan tool or a snap-on or otc genisis will tell you so so much more information than just a code reader. If you want to accuratly diagnose something you will need more than just a code scanner or a scanner that only tells you generic info. You can read codes on these trucks through the odometer display but you can't clear them with out a scanner/code reader.

Most scanners have a Can-Bus adaptor that can be installed in-line.

My GM tech 2 has a unit they call the CANDI that bring`s the scanner up to Can-Bus capability.
