2000 Dodge. Runs for a time, then quits. Puts codes 1688 and 1689 out. After cooling down codes disappear and truck will start again. Help! Any ideas what is going on?

From the code list in the FAQ section:

P1688 (M) Internal Fuel Injection Pump

Controller Failure

Internal problem within the fuel injection pump. Low

power, engine derated, or engine stops.

P1689 (M) No Communication Between ECM

and Injection Pump Module

Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection

pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.

Sounds like you either have a bad connection to your injection pump, or the electronics on the pump are bad.

Like they have all said probably a VP going out. I have had only a code 1689 & if I reset the code it will restart. Mine never would quit running just would not restart. I have had it checked & they feel it is a ECM as when it would not start there was no power on term 6&7 at the pump connector but put 12v power at 6&7 at the pump & it started. We cleaned all the connections + the battery terminals & so far it has been ok, but like I said I only got a code 1689. A 1688 usually means a VP.

JKidd you are right about the relay as that was another thing they told me to check if it did it again. They said to swap the relay with one that I know is working. Thanks for adding that & jarring my memory. When you get my age you tend to forget some things.
