Truck is a 98. 5 24 v 5 speed 3500. supper chip set on tow safe, otherwise stock. The truck is used for towing a 3 car trailer . Usually has a gross weight of about about 23-27k. The truck seems to run fine but after its been at highway speed for some time (70 mph) upon slowing down to lower speeds after a few mins it will go dead pedal and act like its shut off. This is potentialy dangerious as its usually in town or constrution zones. All electrics stay on and fuel presure remains good . There is no responce to pumping the pedal for a few seconds (5-10) then it comes back to life and runs fine. The check eng light comes on and it throws the fallowing codes P 1693,P1698,J1850,P0121,P0602, I have been to the chrysler dealer and the cummins dealer and they offer no solutions . This condition comes and goes but is getting more frequent. I need to get this solved. Im tempted to buy a new VP44 ,Map,and what ever else may be the problem but Im afraid of spending a couple of grand just to have the same problem. Iv looked up the codes ,so has the dealer and cummins. No conclusions from anyone. Truck gets the same milage now as it did before this happened(8. 5 under heavy tow at 70 mph). No smoke, bucking or hesitation, good power. What is a good plan of attack? Thanks Otis

The 0121 says the APPS is bad, however the other codes suggest you may have a grounding problem. I'd check and clean all grounds first (ECM, PCM, block, etc. ) and see if it goes away/code readouts change.

Sounds like your VP44 is good.

What is an APPS and where would I find it ? Same question in regard to finding the ground on the ECM, PCM,Block and anything else that comes to mind that might need cleaned -tightened for a good ground. What you say is the most logical thing Iv heard so far. I have a drag car and do all my own work but its all old school big block mopar gas stuff and this new electrical stuff on the truck is really new but Im trying to learn as best I can . thanks for the help .

Otis, The APPS is called a bell crank by Dodge dealers and will run about 350-400 with them but I would suggest looking in Ebay or classifieds for one first unless you dont mind paying the huge dealer price. The APPS is an electronic throttle piece that tells your computer how hard you are pushing the go pedal and sends the signal to the VP for fueling purposes. It is mounted under the black plastic cover directly above your VP and takes minimal effort to replace it as well as no special tools... just a screwdriver and a few smaller metric sockets will get the job done in less than 15 minutes. I would be almost 100% sure this is your problem right now as I had the exact same thing happen with my truck.

I also seen your post about the vacuum pump exchange. Just get a freight quote and double it to cover shipping back and the cost of the kit is all I expect, but if you insist on paying me for my time any donation is accepted. I just like to help my fellow members out when I can. MY zip code is 52140 for reference.

Hope my babbling helps you, Chris

I got the bell crank Assembly out no problem. got the little throttle positioning sensor off. looks like its got a little wiggle room to adjust the idle with the slots in the screw holes. Can I buy just the sensor or will they only sell the whole assembly . ? I also found a small exaughst leak where the turbo fresh air side bolts to the exaughst side of the turbo. It appears to be held on with 2 half circle rings with 2 bolts in each half. one half is missing the other half was loose. I will see if I can round one up at the cummins dealer tommorow . Thanks for the advise on the bell crank . Its easy to service once you know how.

My truck has been acting the same for a while now. I replaced the tps cleaned the grounds added dielectric grease to my connections. It helped for a while then started acting a fool again. Started saveing money, knew this was going to cost. I just took my truck to a diesel injection shop found out my vp44 and lift pump are both toast. Got it set up to go in the shop next week.

How do they check the vp 44 ? what kind of numbers is it suppoes to put out? how long does it take to check one. I have a diesel shop near buy but After what Iv ran into with this truck so far Iwont trust any shop to diagnose anything on it unless they can show me whats good and whats bad. I have owned 4 class 8 tractors and several trailers in my life but I have never owned anything that has made repair shops smell fresh blood like this pickup.

Got the new apps on ,cleaned the grounds, truck seems much happier. Runs about 150 rpms less than what it was , so far no more dead petal shut offs at low speeds. Also seems to run quiter than it did. I would like to know how a shop goes about checking the status of a vp44? Does a test exist that can be done that will give them some idea as to what kind of life is left in it? Thanks Otis

Otis, I would strongly suggest 2 things... . GUAGES first and then a savings account for your new VP, because it will be going out sometime. Chris

I have an appiontment mon at TST in columus IN to get industrial inj latest greatest pump. comes with a 6 month unlimited mile warntee. I told them I tow full time they said no problem as long as I dont tap the wire. I have an onboard gauge for the lift pump that is relocated to near the tank. Got 16k out of the last pump. If this one pukes I will have to go with a fast or Rasp
