mild Modification ?

"newby Alert"

During a recent search I read that we can get "trouble codes" through the odometer. Can anyone tell me how?

2. Another thread, another question. On a gas engine if you start adding more oxy. , without adding more fuel you are going to develop a lean mixture that will not only run rough, but also runs hotter. Is this also going to happen if I start playing with the wastegate adjustment on my diesle?

Once again, thanks in advance.

Reading codes

Turn your engine off. Turn the key off and on three times but without bumping the starter. The codes will appear.

fuel and air

Unlike most people, I learned about diesels before gassers, so much of the gasser stuff still bewilders me to no end.

Since it is a compression ignition engine, adding air will LOWER your exhaust/operation temps. That is a good thing. A diesel has no pre set air to fuel ratio like a gasser- it is infinitely variable, depending on load, and to an extent, RPMs. So, adding more air wont make it run rough, or stall, or anything like that. Add the air, then fuel to burn in the "excess" air, then more air to cool it down; it's a vicious circle, and a symptom of BOMB bug biting. Conversely, adding more fuel will increase your EGTs and operating temps.

BTW- dont add straight oxygen to the diesel- oxy and oil go BOOM from what I hear. Dont have the cajones to try it out myself.

Thanks guys. After posting my initial thread I kept thinking ( not a good thing for me, makes my head hurt ) that there was a third question but couldnt think of it. Since from what I understand, pre turbo is cool air from the air cleaner, and post turbo is exhaust, do people use a pre turbo pyro?

Pre- or post-turbo

There are threads galore on this topic. It depends on whether you want to monitor the health of the engine or health of the turbo. A huge majority care more for engine health. Check the threads for more information, where to locate, etc. The install is simple if you're handy w/tools and understand how to "vacuum" up metal shavings. If you aren't, take the truck to a diesel performance shop and let a professional do it.

Pre-turbo is between the engine and the turbo. Post-turbo is between the turbo and the muffler.

Both are in the exhaust flow, not the intake.
