It was so cold here this morning that for the first time ever the old girl would not generate heat in the cab. Coldest drive to work in years. -44C = -47F .... Thawed her out in the shop and all is well now.

Why in the world do you live in a place that is consistently that cold??? It hit 6 degrees with a windchill in the negatives last week... that was miserable weather to be outside. Coldest I have ever been is -6 at a football game, but I was drunk and my team won!

comrade! where do you live? my 02 dodge cummins froze up on the side of the road a few years ago when it was - 21 in colorado. still have the old truck, but run the winter cover on the 18 ram 2500. huge difference in heat output and warmup. cheers!

The Chicago area last week had a low of -31F in the morning. My temp gage on the truck read a -29 in Oswego at 7:00 AM that day. My wife had to drive her car to the service garage to fix the wiper motor that failed in her car. So, I drove my truck to pick her up and than we went to the grocery store. I do run a winter front on my truck from Nov 1 to March 1, opening and closing the flaps as needed. I did not close any flaps the day that the morning temps were at -31F but the truck water temp per the gage was almost 200 F and the truck was putting out heat.
So, do you use a winter front? This does help in keeping the truck warm for winter use.

3 the other morning was cold enough for me. The older I get the less I enjoy winter. I know we've still got 3 months to go but I'm ready for spring. I'm really the fool living some place where I waste the first 6 months of each year waiting for the nice weather to get here for it to only last 3 months and the cold returns. I've been hearing the promises of Global warming and how we are going to have a much warmer climate here in the North East, Palm trees I once heard would be the norm here...… Yea BULL SH*#! I just have to find a job that pays some place warm.

Until this day I have not ever needed a winter front. My 14 would warm up and the be so warm that I'd turn the temp down. I do not like the factory vinyl paint scratcher, so next year I will look at a stainless insert style.

Amen Ed.
I was snowed in for couple of days. Doesn't bother me at all. Sit back and enjoy my vacation.

I ask myself this too sometimes, but then we do not have tornadoes, hurricanes, giant spiders, etc ... but we do have cell free wilderness, clean air, low crime, and great beer.

I use the winter front, not a big deal. 01 needs it more than 17 does. keeps the grille from packing full of snow or ice which can cause it to overheat, no matter the temp outside. Bust enough drifts or plow enough snow, even icy spray from a big truck in front of you could do it. I have had it happen a few times on the Ford plow truck, not real often, but once is too often.

I have included two pictures of my winter front! As you can see there is no paint scratches caused by my winter front.

Your truck should make ample heat at 40 below. The only time I wished for more heat was during a winter hunt and my truck had been cold soaked to -45 for almost 5 days. It took about 30 miles towing a trailer before I had perceptible heat. I only had it plugged in for about 4 hours prior to starting and it was still darn cold.

I have the grill cover that came with the snowplow package. I use it when it gets cold. I think it is good for the engine to warm up quickly. It also prevents the truck from cycling the thermostat so much. My '98 would do it so bably that the heater would go from cold to hot and back to cold over and over. It was annoying so I put a piece of masonite in front of the part of the radiator. Don't use cardboard it will get wet and disintegrate and get into the fins in the radiator core.

Simple pc of carpet hung between the intercooler and radiator with a 8" diameter hole centered on the fan will do wonders! May need to be a bit creative with removing the top cover and replacing it. Did this on my 9812V for years during the winter.

The pic above would be a better option but is not free.

I will definitely look at a winter front soon.
One other issue is the factory fill 50/50 OAT is only good for -37C / -34F...gelled off in the heater core is my guess as to what happened.

That’s great.......but, after all, this is the 4th GEN Forum.

Kind of an inaccurate comparison I would think.....

I'm surprised at the praise you guys have RE adequate heat. The coldest Ive seen in my gen 4 ownership is around -22F and the heat SUCKS. This in a Tradesman with a very limited number of heat settings. Do the higher trims have better heat?
