My Dad's 96 12 valve won't start when cold. Where do we start looking for the problem? It was fine one day and the next time he went to cold start it, it won't fire. We used a shot of starting fluid to get it going.

I think you might have a grid heater problem. using a multi-meter check to see if your getting voltage at the grid cables when the "wait to start" light is on. If you don't your timer is possibly bad. If you do remove the wires at the heater an do a continuity check on the heater. There is more info on this problem in the search section. A friend of mine had a poor start problem and it turned out to be the fuel return line. So don't ignore that possibility.

good luck --dave--

I had problems with the fuel return line on mine, too. Caused a hard starting problem. After I fixed that, she runs like a new truck.

Follow the wires back from the grid heaters to the relays on the fender well, there should be four of them. Make sure the nuts are tight at the relays. Mine were only finger tight after 5 years, and weren't making contact enough to heat up the grid. They're under little rubber caps.
