Yesterday I went to start my truck, the idle was real rough and the truck would barely run. I then turned the truck off and restarted it and this was better, but not normal. I noticed quit a bit of white smike as well. I usually keep the truck in the garage so this would have been its coldest start for me. The temp was about 32 degrees which is not that cold considering. This morning when I started it it was not to bad, but still does not seem right.

What could be the cause of this?

Also, does anyone know how the cruise control idle speed works or how to tell if I have the option?

Common complaint with no solution, as DC is in denial. :-{}

Manual high idle can be enabled by the dealer... if they can find it and know what to do :{

it's a diesel it better do that it's completely normal it only runs rough for a few seconds then hi idle automatically kicks in.

I have had many diesels and yes they do idle a bit rough when cold, but this was bad. It was choking spitting and sputtering. Far from normal.

I had that happen about three times this summer, always the next morning after a long steady highway run.

Sounds like a gunked-up injector(s). I'd run it by the dealer to, if nothing else, document the problem in case it is a faulty injector.

I ran a strong dose of injector cleaner through my next tank. The problem hasn't come back in about 6 months. You might try that.
