Ok this is begginning to happen more frequently.

Truck will start then die immediately. Then I must crank it for 20-30 seconds to get it start again. After that it runs fine.

Conditions:

cold truck (so far only after sitting overnight)

outside temps 10-45 degrees

grids are working (not that it is cold enough not to start without them)

fuel tank level from full to 1/2 tank

RASP fuel pump with stock backup

Starts fine runs for 5 seconds or less

dies

then must crank 20-30 seconds before it will start again

once it starts the second time it runs and starts fine the rest of the day.

Anyone have any ideas on what to look for. I have not noticed any leaking fuel or anything(see or smell). My only thoughts are water in the fuel filter cannister. However I have drained that and this has occurred over many tanks of fuel(10+) and have even run the fuel very low a couple times to get as much old stuff out as possible in case it was bad fuel or water contamination. The only other thing I can think of is no fuel getting there ie loosing prime but how do you track that down for sure?

Any other ideas or anyone else have this problem before?

Sounds like a small leak in the fuel lines is letting air in the fuel system. I'd checked all the fuel lines and connections. How are you liking the rasp system. I'm on my 4th LP and an looking into alterentives (sp). Good luck, Phil

I need to get home sometime before dark or get an actual day or two off so that I can crawl under there in the daylight and check the lines closely. I would be suprised if it is a leaking line since they have all been replaced recently when I installed the rasp but you never know. Also no drips in the driveway or fuel smell or wet spots that I can see in the dark with a light but will check the lines and connections closely.

I do like the rasp. I have had it for about 25-30k now.

If you are parking on a slope, nose up, try backing in.

If the fuel feed, or return line has a minor leak it will act like that with no noticeable fuel leak.

you need to be sure that the lift pump is pumping when it quits (pressure gage will do this) and also the shcrader valve on the side of the injection pump is working OK. I had to replace mine for a problem close to what you are experiencing

I am having the same exact issues. I ran my codes and found my crank position sensor was bad, but I have not replaced it yet. However, I do not believe you have a crank position sensor on your 2001. 5. I will post again when I take a look at it this week.

My issue turned out to be a dead lift pump. The RASP will still start the truck, but it takes a lot of cranking to get the fuel pressure up.

Interesting, 99 similar problem, will run for 25 seconds to 2 minutes then dies, needs ether to restart. Fuel pressure is ok. Going to check for air leaks.

Heres the codes this ones tripping, related? I don't know.

0380 glow plug heater cirt malfuntion

1689 oil pressure solenoid circuit malfunction.

Fix: install 92 1st gen engine with 285,000, throw 24 valve in the trash.

BarryG and I are still having this issue. I have replaced my lift pump and it runs, but still the same situation. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Eric
