cold starts

93 1st gen. It seems to take a long time for the block heater to get the engine warm enough to start. How do I check the preheats element? They don't seem to help in starting. Thanks

first thing you want to check is the relays on the left side inner fender, there will be 2 of them side by side with heavy gauge cables going to them. If they are working try using a multi meter to check the resistance across the grids them self.
