New 2009, 2500, picked up Thanksgiving week. Still on the honeymoon no real concerns yet. I have noticed now that it cold that the transmission wont shift into OD until 3-5 miles down the road. looks like I am in 5th. 2000 RPM at 50 mph. Not sure if this is normal to help the system warm up or flaky transmission. thanks Kjugle

Not entirely sure if the new ones like yours are the same, but the older ones like my 47RE have the control circuit set up so that it won't let the transmission shift into taller gears (3rd and OD in my case) until the fluid temp reaches about 50 degrees or so. My guess on yours is that it's perfectly normal.

Kjugle,

First off, welcome aboard!

In these colder temperatures, it sounds like what you're experiencing is perfectly normal.

From the "Starting and Operating" section of your owner's manual:

"Upshifts into both overdrive gears, 5th and 6th, will be delayed when the transmission fluid temperature is below 40° F (4. 5° C) or above 240° F (115. 5° C). "

Happy holidays,

Mine does the same thing when it's super cold, but after a few miles it works just fine like it should. 294k on mine so heres hopeing they were made by the same shift... .

20 degrees here in "The Greatest Snow on Earth" state (Utah). . Just had 4 inches of snow yesterday. . Now it is clearing out.

I drive Big truck for 10 hours and when I return at night, it is cold enough that I warm the engine 3 min. , drive a mile to the freeway maximum 4th gear selected, then onto the freeway. .

it takes another 2 miles of 55 mph at 2000 rpm until the trans shifts up to 6th. . . I was wondering about this as it doesn't do it in warmer temps but I guess it is normal... Kinda neat actually as it helps the engine warm up faster.
