I Didn't Know It Went That Fast

Can anyone tell me how to fix the problem with my automatic transmission after it sits for a day or so. I realize the fluid returns to the transmission after I warm it up in neutral to pump it through the system. Is there a fix for this or do I have to keep living with it. This is on a 1st generation 1992 250. It's been a great truck.

The cause for TC leakdown, at least on the 47RE like on my '98, is a leaking or missing check valve in the cooling line. Since the valve occasionally causes bigger problems when it sticks closed or plugs up, I felt waiting the minute or so for it to pump up was worth it. If the wait bothers you, you might investigate replacement with a new one.

This doesn't bother me. My starting routine on all my present and past Dodge automatic transmission trucks is, start the engine, immediately place the transmission neutral. Idle anywhere from 5 seconds to 30 seconds, then go. From what I understand, an aftermarket shift kit eliminates this, by allowing fluid flow while in park. Someone else will need to chime in on that though.

There is an updated Manual Valve that addresses the torque convert circuit drain back. I don't know when or if OEM implemented it, year model etc. But there is a good chance that is one of the problems. Another thing it could be is a technique that was common in transmission building, they would drill the valve body for one reason or another, I forget the purpose right now but that could contribute to more drainback (worse). The Manual Valve upgrade is easy and reasonable. If you can live with the drainback it shouldn't take more than one minute for the TC circuit to charge in neutral. Bill is right on, Neutral is the key. In the time it takes the oil pressure to come up on the engine you should be able to drive off.

It is a simple valve modofication to get the trans to pump fluid in park. You do have to remove the VB and replace a few parts but not that hard. OEM never did this to date. Even the 48RE's don't circulate in park. The 68RFE's I believe do but hey are a whole new design.
