Due to the extremely tight distallate fuel (diesel, home heatingt oil, jet fuel, kerosene) supplies in the US this fall, the quality and availability of winterized #2 Diesel fuel may be a little 'iffy' - this information is straight from associates in the refining and fuel supply system. For those of us that live in the colder climates, non-winterized #2 and / or home heating will gell in the tank @ around 10F - even with anti-gel additive. :(

If this happens the, engine will quit very quickly. To restart the engine, you will need to ungel the fuel in the tank and the fuel supply line to the lift pump, and then bleed the injectors. According to several Cummins Mechanics, if the fuel in the tank gels, it will also cause the mechanical lift pump on the side of the engine to fail or to pump at a significantly reduced capacity, i. e. it will also need replaced. The pump fails because it is basically trying to pull a vacuum when the fuel in the tank gels - and it is not designed for that type of suction pressure, (After the fuel system is operating 'normally', you will also want to change the fuel filter ASAP. )

From recent personal experience, the truck will run at 30 mph in 4th gear with the lift pump at a reduced pumping capacity - any faster and you will get more practice bleeding injectors, etc. :) Cummins mechanics also stated that 30 mph was a pretty good rule of thumb for this condition. Aftermarket lift pumps, (i. e. NAPA, Checker, etc. ) seem to be more susceptible to damage if the fule gels in the tank but the Cummins part will also suffer from this problem.

To bleed the injectors: 17 mm open end wrench

To change the lift pump: 10 mm & 17 mm socket, 14 mm open end wrench, water pump pliers, screwdriver.

To change the fuel filter: Good quality filter wrench is helpful.

Time to change the lift pump: 45 minutes when the temp is 15F above zero and the sun is shining.

Finally, some of the 1st gen Dodge fuel filter heater elements have a fine mesh screen where the fuel enters the heater element prior to entering the fuel filter. You might also want to check that for pluggage, etc. The heater element removes quite easily when the fuel filter is removed.
