well it's cold now and i have a question. I use straight #2 and add power service as needed for conditions,do we get any fuel heating from bypassing or is there a line heater somewhere by the filter unit? I know there is no tank heater. If ran continually do you even need additive. The bigger engines in the trucks bypass enough that the tanks feal warm.

the only fuel heater that i am aware of is the one that is mounted in the fuel filter housing to heat the fuel entering the filter. and yes it is possible for fuel to gel while the truck is running but ur temps would have to be very low.

I use

straight number two with Power Service fuel treatment all year with no starting problems. Exxon has number two, one and blend all year here.

Yes on warm fuel returning to tank!

I know the older 12Vs return allot of preheated fuel to the tank, I know 24V do also, just not sure how it compares. On a 12V, I would say once runnning you will not gell (fill up with staight #2, engine warm and drive). I did this many, many times coming back from KS to ND. I would fill at Sioux City with temps just below zero (no blend either) and drive straight through to ND with temps as low as -28. Lucky... . maybe! I have an extra 40 gallons in the box that gravit feeds to the main tank. It would even flow enough to drain.

I think between the fuel filter heater and the returning fuel it keeps the fuel temp from dropping much. Stop and sleep for many hours and that would be a different story.

I have not ran any #1 (even blended with #2) in 5 years. Going to wake up to -25.

I seem to remember reading a thread somewhere that stated the need for the lift pump pressure was for cooling of the vp. Also seem to remember that this person had rigged a temporary five gallon tank for some reason and the fuel was noticeably hot. This seems to be the reason that we have like 6 gallons left when the guage is pinned on red. Correct me if I'm wrong... .

More cold weather driving questions

It hasn't been above freezing here in a couple of weeks. Mostly mid 20's and the past few day's it's been single digits.

First off it seems like the truck has been down on power the past few days. Not a lot but noticable. Boost also seems down 2-3 lbs. Is this normal ?

Another question is , should I be putting any additives in the fuel ? I normally do when I go up north but that's it. I buy my diesel at BP and wast told it is winter blend.

I've had the grille blocked off for a while.

80% of the fuel that goes to the engine is returned to the tank (on a stock Engine) as for the bombed trucks it just depends on how well bombed you are:cool:

The coldest it has ever been, since I've lived in the South Georgia/North Florida area that I'm aware of is 14 degrees. That was many years before I owned my truck. The coldest weather since I've owned the truck is probably going to be tonight when it is expected to drop into the mid teens. During a fuel filter change about two years ago, after a few days of temps in the 30's at night and 50's during the day, I noticed gelled fuel in the bottom of the fuel canister. One caveat: I didn't use fuel additive until after BOMBing, so that may have been the cause, as I hadn't done uprates yet. I'm surprised, but happy, you guys that are way up north aren't seeing your fuel gel, especially the guys running #2 year round.

well it gelled at 15 below. it would idle but had to let it run for an hour before it had any power. had plenty of power service in it and seemed to cut the wax after going easy on it for 5 miles than it ran fine! by the way i say 5 trucks stopped with their hoods up with problems and my semi with blended and power service ran bad for 2 hours. below 0 and it will be blended with #1 from now on. thanks for the input!
