Anyone Ever heard of a Fly-Mow

Anyone know anything about coleman lanterns (white gas)? I was given one that was last burned several years ago. I put several new mantles and fuel in it and lit it up but every time it burns bright for about 30 secs then starts burning orange. Figured I was getting crap in the mantle from inside so tonight I dissasembled the entire lantern and cleaned out the fuel tube, rod, tip cleaner etc. It looked like an old gummed up carb (even had a jet) so I used used carb cleaner to clean in out. I even flushed out the tank to clean out any crap. After putting it all back together (no pieces left over;)) with new fuel it did the same damn thing. This is my first time using a coleman lantern maybe I'm doing something wrong but they're not that hard to use. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like either it's not pumped up enough or the jet is plugging. There should be a little lever on the side, if you turn this lever 180 degrees it runs a a little wire through the jet and cleans it. You can do this while it is lit. Also after the flame settles down and the mantle is bright, open the valve wide open. bg

In case you didn't know just touching the mantle with your hands ruins it due to your hand oil. You almost have to treat them like a halogen lamp bulb.

Thanks for the Ideas. I've tried the tip cleaner and have only held the mantle by the strings. I'll try and get a new generator, some of the parts had a lot of crap on them which I cleaned most of off but it doesn't look like it would take much to plug the jet. I wonder if I can order parts online from coleman? Thanks again for the suggestions.

After years of camping out using white gas fueled equipment, I can only offer you this one word of advice. PROPANE!!:)

I buy all old Colemans I run into too. I would replace the generater and make sure the air tube does not have muddaubers or a spiders nest in it. Also, make sure that the valve in the tank seals to prevent pressure leaking out of the tank. I have seen some with a small hole in the top of the tank too small to let fuel out but big enough to let out pressure. :(

1-800-835-3278 is their toll free lantern and stove #. If you get stumped call them... they are very good.

One little thing most people don't know, After installing a new mantle(s) light the mantles without turning on the gas. they will turn white and ashen looking and burn out. Then relight with the gas going! If you don't do this procedure, you will just burn holes in your mantles and have a mess.
