Seriously.

Now hear me out -- I'm looking seriously at a local truck that's pretty clean, but since it is at a dealership, there's no record of its service. :(

The only thing that jumps out underhood (besides the cleanliness) is a Cummins' standard tan/yellow fuel pump. Is the stock pump black, like everything else under the hood? Can I assume that this pump has been changed?

Excuse the silliness of this question, but the price on the truck is a bit higher than I'd like to pay, and I'm trying to rationalize good points in its favor (like the new tires) to justify the purchase.

Thanks,

Randii

Agreed, the color is that odd one, I believe it is/used to be called

'bluek' a combo of blue/black and proprietary to Cummins.

BTW, it's also hard to get if I remember right... seems people were fiddling with things then re-paint ..... don't know why anyone would need to do that thought... ..... ;)

It kinda sounds like the pump came off a industrial engine. Haveing a new pump is OK, but, you need to check to see if it has a AFC. Some stationary engines did not have it as it was not needed. Drive the truck and see if it smokes like crazy and has no power at low speeds.

And yes, all of the engines put in our rigs are Black. Or whatever color you want to call it.

And THAT is why I got an early Christmas present. A polisher. Even steel isn't safe anymore.

I bought a reman injector pump from Cummins about 1. 5 years ago. It came in that nasty tan-yellow color. Probably just a reman pump.

The original injection pump on my truck was black, but under the 1994 Safety Recall the pump was changed and the replacement has metallic brassy look.

Remember, there was a tsb for our first gens regarding injection pump replacement. My Dad's truck has an un-painted pump on it, and we kind of assumed it was one of the truck's that were subject to that campain. If it runs fine, I would not worry about it :)

Just my observations: The pumps replaced by DC are a unpainted or metalic color, (in general). I assume because they are new and not reman. Of course other rebuild shops may also clean all the paint off them.

The tan pumps are probably a Cummins Recon.

I don't know that one is necessarily better than the other.

I would say its good that the pump has been replaced, as long as there are no other signs of hot rodding such as, plugged waste gate, egt probe, etc. Look to see if the tamper seals are on the pump screws.

The tan color was confirmed by our local Cummins Northwest shop here in Anchorage as being a sign of a reman part.

I was inquiring about an updated hp pump at Cummins West here in San Leandro a few weeks ago for My "93". As I know the foreman there, He stated that they had a 180 hp pump for the 160 hp engines. This pump was the old Cummins gold color. He said at that time this pump gave out good hp. Possibly that pump was on that engine. Its a Bosch rotary.
