Where to ride 4 wheelers on big trip thru Southwest?

Can any of you Colorado dwellers recommend any r. v. parks not near a fire area? I prefer alpine as opposed to plains area. I have a low clearance tt so it has to be smooth access. Recreation in the area is a factor. Some 4x4 trails nearby would be nice so as I can test out the new goat.

I have contacted a few places I found on the net. Im looking for some inside info. (scoop).

I am planning to drop the tt and do quite a bit of roaming in the ctd. Any other info. regarding local flavor (good chow, good watering holes, scenic drives) is appreciated.

Will head up north this coming sunday. I am from Texas, but I am polite, courteous and well mannered:p

"Not near a fire area?"

hmmmm, lemme think. Nope not in Colorado this year. :( :(

Whole state is under extreme fire warnings, campfires banned, the whole 9 yards. If your in the state it's a fire area.

BUT ANYWAY,

Still lots of areas to have fun in that haven't been hit by fires.

Great spots:

1. Silverjack Resevoir just S of Cimarron. If you find Owl Creek Pass you're there. Excellent trails of all variety are available and I know they have at least one campground just north of the resevoir. El Rancho Cimarron (I think). Beautiful area and can test the best of vehicles, even beyond the Ram capabilities/desires on some trails (like rockclimbing)

2. Alpine Tunnel (if you're into history). Try a web search, lots of info.

3. Royal Gorge (are you afraid of heights?)

4. Pike's Peak (of course) I recommend the cog railway for ascent/descent

5. Cripple Creek if you gamble

6. Good Chow-If you're disconnected from the TT try out Beaujo's Pizza in Idaho Springs just west of Denver if you're going up there. GREAT high altitude food! Idaho Springs might be tight manuvering with the trailer. There's another in Manitou Springs'ish area by Colorado Springs too if not going that far north. Also on the web.

7. If in Denver visit the "Traildust" restaurant. Best steaks I've ever had were from there (that includes time spent in Texas, Louisiana, etc)

8. Castle Rock is having their yearly 'Renaissance Festival' until the end of July (I think) if you like the Turkey leg, jesters, jousting, kings and queens, swordfight, medevil scene.

That's off the top of my head. Kinda hard without knowing where ya want to call stopping points. Don't have an RV so sorry I can't fill you in on more cause I just never paid attention to them before(parks).

My favorite camping place is at Frisco, on Lake Dillon. We camp at Peak One camp gound in the White River National Forest. There are no fires near Frisco at this time, and I hope it stays that way.

Another nice place is along Homestake Creek near Minturn. There is a campground about 8 miles up the road called Gold Park, or you can boondock in some spots along the road. This area is bordering the Holy Cross Wilerness Area.

Another spot is in the Taylor Resouver (sp) area near Gunnison. Pretty good fishing upstream from the lake, and real pretty.

The major fires are SW of Denver (Hayman fire), West of Glenwood Springs (Coalseam fire), and one near Durango. Colorado is a big state with lots of recreational space. Although there are several fires, most of the state is accessable. Please obey the fire restrictions and be careful, and enjoy your visit.

Check these links for camping info.

Don't forget the Coors :D factory in Golden, Colorado. And man, those steaks at the Traildust were HUGE . Something like one moo-cow per 6. 5 customers. Mighty cute waitresses in wrangler jeans too.

If you can narrow down where in the state you might be it could help as Karts mentioned. Sregorb's suggestion of Silverjack resevoir is a good one. There is some wheeling in the area, great hiking just south of the campground in what used to be called the big blue wilderness area which I think they changed or added to the Wimenuche wilderness area. It is right up the road from Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument. Taking the Owl creek Pass road you end up just north of Ouray and there is definitely wheeling in that area with unsurpassed scenery all along US550 to the south and you will be far north of the Durango fire. You could also head over the hill to Telluride. And to the east of Black Canyon you have Lake City with an alpine loop road that is very nice as well. The campground at Silver Jack is pretty nice no hookups though if that is important to you. And as Klenger stated in Frisco you have all the amenities close by and just over Hoosier Pass you have some wheeling from near Alma to Leadville over 13000ft Misquito Pass (among other wheeling spots). The CTD should be able to do that fine. Hiking galore in the area too. If you want to bag some 14ers just outside of Alma you can hit three in one hike (Mt Democrat, Mt Lincoln and Mt Bross). If you have kids and even if not the ever popular Alpine slide is a hoot which is in Breckenridge. I take my son there every year or is it I go and he has to come along not really sure. Regardless of what our sometimes ignorant govenor says on National television the whole state is not on fire and is open for business as usual except as previously stated no campfires or charcoal grills anywhere in the state due to the fire danger.

Thanks for the information. I am printing out this thread and taking it with us. I have been to Colorado about 15 times and looking for something I have not seen before. I have stayed in Buena Vista,Aspen,Grand Lake,Westcliffe,Steamboat Springs etc... I elk hunted near Platora-bet you never heard of it? I have never hauled a tt up there. In past trips we have roach moteled and tent camped. We will do our best to stay away from metro areas. We will do all of our cooking in the trailer. We will not be having any fires. We prefer hookups(water and electric) for most of the trip as long as we are not packed in like sardines.

We have a lot of time and can go anywhere in the state. We even talked about heading further up north to Wyoming.

The tt weighs about 5k . This should put the new HO well on its way to break in.

Thanks again
