Just found out Cummins shiped the wrong yr 5. 9 to my local shop to replace my worn out one. I'm able to upgrade to a 215hp 5. 9. My understanding is it has the p7000 pump. Anyone had much experence with this motor in a 1st gen. Dodge. To late to back out now they got my $$$$$$ Looking for comments as to what all makes up the 215 vs. the 160hp. TIA, Mike

Some of the changes to the post '94 B5. 9L were: 1) Inline P7100 injection pump (higher injection pressure and more precise timing)
2) Fuel lines redesigned to accomodate effectively the higher pump output
3) Relocated fuel filter to intake manifold bracket from head casting
4) Piston pin bore and conn. rod bushing reduced to tighten piston/pin/rod clearance
5) Piston rings moved up position (later moved back down)
6) Camshaft material changed to chilled ductile iron, cam lobes widened, camshaft tappet faces hardened
7) Wastegate added to now a 12cm hot end turbo housing
8) WH1C or later a HX35 turbo
Find out the CPL and build date of the motor. . I can narrow down and focus on the details a little more. (The CPL will help identify the injector size).
If the Cummins shop can assure you of a clean, hassle free (fuel lines, input shaft, clutch, wires, connectors, PCM, and coolant connects, etc. ) install and hook up, GO FOR IT.
I've powered up a great '92 over the last few years, and have recently aquired a '98 12 valve. If you can get the Cummins shop to FOCUS on the task, and realize the "not just a drop and go" job, YOU WILL have a top shelf hauler.
Get the CPL # off of the side of the timing cover. The engine data plate is there.
Hope this helps a bit.

Hey Old School, as usual your years of Dodge know how are once again appreciated very much. I was quoted 24 hrs of labor to swap this puppy out All I really know is that is a B5. 9 215hp DR971RX motor I just placed the order today. I was assured it would fit w/o any problems. From the main Fl. office in Tampa, Fl & my local Cummins here in Ocala. I thought about the std 160hp and then upgrading to the 230 conversion. But the 215 swap seemed ok. If you can offer more info that this thing will not fit w/o mods please advise. I have a written quote for a grand total of $10878. 00 Plus oil, antifreeze, belt, etc. The 160 motor would run $6148. 00 and the 215 was $ 8309. 00. This motor sounds like a pulling fool which in my line of work is much needed. Thanks for your input my friend ! Best regards, Mike hopeing this 215 fits Hurd I'll do my best to get the CPL # asap. It was just ordered today takes approx 1 week to arive. Thanks again.

Yes Mike, the engine will fit the truck, as it's an evolutionary upgrade of the original 160 engine. My original concern was that they were not aware of any small but not inconsequential changes to mounts, hookups, etc. After a price quote, and some conversations, you may be feeling comfortable about the repower.
The CPL number and build date I mentioned will help pinpoint the details of the particular engine as far as injectors, ring to piston top location,(they were moved up, then back down),etc.
You will appreciate the B motor 12 valve as you haven't before!
Glad to help... Long may you run.

Hey Mike!

As mentioned in my earlier posting, GO FOR THE "P" PUMP! I believe this addition would make for the perfect First Generation Hauler.

Does anyone else have "P" Pump envy or is it just me?

Mine began when Ted "J" handed me all 50+ lbs of that mini six cylinder devoted to pumping as much fuel as a small refinery.

I'm with you Keeno! It would be great to have a 1st Gen sleeper. Show those 2nd geners a thing or two(12 or 24 valve!).

Here's some small, but significant details.

Intercooler hoses: Different size and location.

Air intake: Taller adapter.

Fuel filter: Very close to brake unit

Linkage: Linkages are all different - cable terminates differently, has different length, etc.

Exhaust: Terminates different style and location.

Sensors: terminate differently and may be calibrated different.

None of these are insurmountable, however, I'd either get a fixed price for the install regardless of adaptations, or else get a crew who's done this before to do the install, so they don't waste your money trying to fabricate stuff.

Just my $0. 02 worth.

Power wagon, Thanks for the info. I got worried when Old School said what he replyed with. Guess, I'll contact Cummins tomorrow and see what they say. I do have a "fixed" quote, but started to get worried now. I could have gone the route of 160HP then upgrading to the 230 upgrades. But was informed the 215 was a drop and go motor. Thanks once again for everyones input and knowalage. Will let you all know what the sales rep says. Thanks again, Mike

Do the 1st and 2nd gen intercoolers have different capacities? I have a 98/215 going into a 72 d300 and was planning on getting a 1st gen intercooler for easier fit but want to make sure i'm not limiting myself.

As I don't have the '92 anymore, I can't compare it side by side with the '98.
I do believe, however, you would want to hook-up with an intercooler from a 1st Gen. truck to make your mounting less complicated.
My '92 would move charge air thru the intercooler without a problem. With a 16cm2 hot end housing, boost will approach 30psi. The factory intercooler for '92 is fine.

I seem to recall the 215 hp rating was Dodge only-Cummins did make a 210 hp for other applications. If it is the Dodge engine, the P pump is excellent and can flow more fuel than the P pumps used in other Dodge applications. The piston rins are 10 mm down instead of 8 and the cam nose is beefed so it wont break at the higher rpm the 215 hp engine is governed to. The CPL of the original Dodge 215s was 2023 in 96 or 2175 afterwards. The only difference was supposedly the pump timing of 12. 5 deg on the 2023 vs. 13. 5 deg on the 2175. There were two P 7100 pumps used, -877 on the early ones and -913 on the later ones. The early pump seemed to have usually a higher governed speed but more fuel pull back as rpm increased.

Hope this helps. Overall I recommend the 215 as the best B engine in Dodges. I guess my favorite B would be the 370 hp Diamond B marine engine #ad
You can guess why #ad

UPDATE : Called the Cummins dealer today. Looking at another $ 500. 00 to make the mods to my system to get the 215 to work as it should. Taking the truck tomorrow to get the work started. Looking at late next week to get it back on the road. Actual install time is 24 hrs labor but they are slammed with work. This should be one heck of a pulling machine when done. The 2 yr 100,000 mile warrenty sure will be a nice thing to have. Thanks for Everyones help, advice and comments. Will let everyone know how great this works out ASAP Thanks again, Mike

Good choice, you'll like the 215.
Another note, the fan mount casting on the 92 is straight up and down, if the 215 comes with one, and it's original Dodge, it will be off-set to the side. Use your 92 casting, the new bearing and hub, then the fan will line up with the shroud.
All in all it should be an easy swap.
Good luck!

UPDATE : Just got back from Cummins. Man this P-7100 Pump looks cool !! They have the eng. in just have to modify the linkage for the go juice, and such. Clutch assy still looks good, Had the radiator cleaned out. So far I'm VERY impressed with the setup. Should not run too much over the quote. Hopeing to have it back by this weekend. They will be putting it on the dyno as well. The 12cm hot end housing sure do look small even up to the Banks unit I'm replacing. I will be putting the old 18. 5cm housing back on the Core motor and keeping the 14cm for a back up or will sell at a later date. Got the Ehx. manifold drilled & tapped for the pyro guage. Did not look too close but overall it seems to be a very clean install. Still have to put the transmission in and get the wiring back together. Sure looks good guys... ... ... . This ought to be one mean pullin machine !!! Thanks for the bandwith Mike

Hey guys, Got the truck back this morning. They messed up the heater core. Replaced it. It leaked. Had them plug the lines till tomorrow AM. Had a rear flat so I had to get that fixed before they could put it on the dyno. So tomorrow I'll know what HP to the rear wheels is. Pyro is about where it ran before. <unloaded> Gained 4lbs of boost now up to 22lbs empty. 1 & 2nd are bout the same. TONS of power in 3 & 4th and good amount in 5th gear. Total cost was $ 12,000. 00 installed. Just the go juice linkage was $ 300. 00 + motor mounts < mine were shot > yada, yada,Will know more tomorrow night. And need a good pull. But overall very impressed with this setup. If anyone needs close up shots of this swap I'll get digital pics out to ya ASAP. Thanks, Mike

Good to get to the wrap-up, eh Mike? And it's not even broken in yet! Good luck with your repower, and keep it hot.

Whhhhhhhhoooooooooo mama, Man this thing has got some raw power. It spent all day back @ Cummins. They replaced the damaged heater core. I expressed concern as to the temp guage reading 1/2 way. I asked for a mech guage " just to be safe " Running at 180-185 deg. Dyno results are avgering 170 HP to the rear wheels. Not too sure what it should avg. But Its def. more power than I had before < seat of the pants meter > Was it worth the $ 12,000. 00 ? If this thing pulls 1/2 as good as it feels now YOU BETCHA. In a heart beat. Too bad I did not do this a year ago. I would just like to say Thanks to everyone here on TDR for their interest And comments. I now feel like I have one Fantastic 1st gen truck. Thanks once again Guys !!!!! Mike < happy camper > Hurd

Give TST a ring & figure out which plate to put in there. If it started life out as a 215hp version, then puttin in the #11 plate will put you well over 300hp & 700 ft-lbs of torque, with the #11 plate slid all the way forward in that P7100. It'll cost you $300 for that. #ad
