Yep I know odd title but here is the problem. I'm due fir rotator cuff sugery on my right shoulder, my truck is a 6 speed and I'm concerned with both being able to drive for up to 3 months and with causing to much stress on a risky out come from the sugery. The sugeron is less than optomistic due to my age and other problems with my shoulder. My wife really does not like driving the truck because it's a manual and has more power then she is comforable with, I really can't blame her. So I'm considering moving up to a 2012 that I can get for a great price. We just put 4 k into new brakes, edge attitude, turbo, shocks it's also paid for. This is keeping me up at nights worring about and just looking for some thoughts in going from a really nice 02 to the 2012. The truck is a 02 3500 dually, nv5600, valair dual disk clutch, rancho 9000's, bd intercooler boots, air bags, on board compressor, 2" front lift, edge attitude /w juice cts.

Buy or rent a car for a few months. Insurance is the expensive part but you may be covered via your truck insurance or a credit card that includes vehicle insurance.

OR you can find a VW TDI diesel automatic, get great fuel milage and have a fun little car that will help your truck to last longer.

Does your 02 fit your needs or are you constantly overloading it? If you dont need more truck, it makes sense to stick with what youve got. If youve been looking for an excuse to upgrade to the newer comforts and capabilities, this may be your chance ;)

Keep the truck and buy a little hoopty (sp:)) car!

Nick

Sports car + automatic = no sports car.

If you have a rotator cuff repair, you should NOT be shifting for a while. The only thing holding your shoulder together for the first 8 weeks is some thin suture. It really takes a full 6 months before you can start using our shoulder. You will be in a shoulder immobilizer for quite a long time. I'm not sure exactly how long it would be until you are allowed to use our shoulder to shift. It depends on your surgeon and how your PT is progressing but count on at least 2, maybe 3 months. Don't try and push it too soon. You will only tear the repair apart and either have to live with it or start the whole thing over again. If they don't repair the cuff and only do a "clean out" and decompression, you can be shifting again in 3 days without issue. As a side note, ask for an interscalene block. You will love the first 24 hours after surgery.

Only you can decide what to do about your truck. I would consider a dirt cheap beater car that will last the 6 months you need it. You will probably not recoupe the 4G's you just put into your truck.

I had my torn (R. ) rotator cuff repaired about four years ago, while I still owned an 06 2500, six speed and I was driving it again within a month. It was not totally pain free, but my personal thinking was I needed to drive and a little non strained exercise would be good for me. I could shift it with my elbow resting on the divider arm rest.
Now, four years later, I would say I'm back to 95% normal. As someone mentioned earlier, in a related thread, my major problem is doing my bathroom paperwork with my right hand. It kind of feels like my right arm is shorter than it used to be.

That's what I did. I like it so much I never drive my truck unless I need to haul or tow something.

Good used VW TDIs have excellent resale value and are in demand in the used market so you could buy one, drive it for several months, then sell it and get your money back. Be careful, you might decide you like it enough to just keep it.

You guy's are briliant, great idea, never even thought of a second car, I'll know more on Wednesday after the preop with the sergon. But in the mean time I'm looking for a good used Subaru, we have a 04 with 225 k on it could use some down time and keep the mileage off the truck, Thanks again, Skip

I had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder about 4 yrs. ago and it didn't interfear with my driving, i shifted with my left arm, no problems at all, my right arm was useless for about 4 months, i still drove my truck, JAT, Monte

Skip,

Lots of TDR members have called me various names over the years but I don't think anyone ever called me brilliant before! Can't say it was a brilliant idea but a second car can be a practical solution. A Suburu would be another good solution. Good luck with your rotator cuff surgery.

Wellllllllllll, it looks like I'm moving up to the 2012, my surgeon was very encourging in the thought of moving away from the 6 speed to an automatic. Were currently overloaded when the artic fox is loaded which will change with the new truck, my beter half is looking foward to driving on long trips to the desert, our 175lb mastiff will be happier with more room in the back and I get a new truck it's win for everybody. thanks for the advice and input, Skip

Howdy Harvey, I just thought I'd be polite,:) beleave me we thought this over long and hard. We have bought 1 used car in 28 years of mariage and that was a desaster. All our other vehicles have been new and were operated for 10 years or more and normally in excess 200,000 miles. The sale of my 02 truck was a hard decision but in the end it will be better for my shoulder. I just cannot risk an injury after a $23,000 operation. Hopefully the 2012 truck will serve us as well as the 02 truck has even with the few problems it experenced. April 11th is the day with any luck I'll be up and around in a couple of weeks and back on the road in 6 to 8 weeks thanks to the automatic. Skip

So here is an update from a while back. Sergury went very well and the surgeron was able to make a full repair and the future looks promising for a full recovery.

We ended up seling our 02 truck and got a great deal on a 2012 3500 dually automatic, very nice truck and my better half really enjoys driving the new truck. A couple of questions does the turbo cool down still play as improtant a situation as with the 5. 9 VP-44 ? I want to use the gages from our 2002 truck so I'm thinking boost, EGT fuel pressure or trans temp. Also is the gorilla still working at Cummins installing ol filters if he is this truck will go to the dealer for the first oil change. Any thought are appreciated, Skip

Yes turbo cool down is important, but sometimes a regen will bring the EGT's higher than you want for shutdown meaning the idle time is more important than the EGT's. It is a water cooled turbo, but only the electronics and not the bearing.

The '12 should have trans temp on the EVIC, and unless you are going to modify the truck I would consider leaving the gauges out. The '12 will run 1400°+ depending on load and regen and that's not easy to watch for someone who has driven a older 5. 9 with gauges.

Yes the gorilla, maybe his big brother, still installs the oil filters.

Congrats on the new truck and successful surgery.

Have you driven any new sports cars lately... . the new automatics are way more efficient in power and shifting than any Manuel transmission... . stick vs auto, the stick will always loose now... ...

The turbo is liquid cooled on all 6. 7 liter engines so allowing a cool down idle period is less important than on earlier 5. 9 engines but the caution is still included in the owner's manual on my '08 and, I assume, all later 6. 7s as well.

Ive been in a 12 Saleen Mustang with an auto and its smokin fast. Still just isnt the same as slammin gears though. Some yrs ago I came across a killer deal on a Mustang GT with an auto. Ive religously been trying to smoke the trans every summer so I can justify installing a 5 speed but its been pretty dang stout. Ive been slowly piecing together a T04 turbo set up to install on it, if the auto is still around when that goes in Im sure it will take care of it. :-laf

As always your lack of facts is never realized by your ignoring half the forum. But don't worry, the rest of us see it.
