I love my 1st Gen... . but I have a "friend" who is looking at a 2005 std. cab 4x4 with a 6-speed. What are the common problems with these trucks? Life of the stock clutch? MPG? Is this thing going to hold together like my 242k 1st Gen? Thanks.

I've heard of a lot of u-joint problems, but I've got 56000 on mine with no problems yet. I have had one injector replaced under warranty.

Problems I have had so far (19,500 miles):

1. Serpentine belt shredded (5400), fix: replacement belt. Several of us here and on DTR have had this happen, only a couple have received any diagnosis other than "bad belt" or "installed wrong".

2. CP3 started leaking (19,000). Fix: dealer replaced

Other than that, this has been a great truck.

Im on my 2nd horn. They dont like the under body car wash  and my drivers side door seal has a chunk out of it right at the point of the door by the mirror. Other then that it ROX.

I have had 2 u-joints and the carrier bearing replaced under warranty around 15k. Everything seems good now at 27k.

I had way more problems with my 93 than my 03. The difference in quality and refinement is unmistakeable. BTW, the stock clutch is fine unless you torch it with a lot of extra HP (like I did).

You friend wont be disappointed!

I had the same problem with my door seals. The dealer replaced the seals on both doors with a new design for free!! They knew about the problem. JOE

KDP, timing cover bolts, too light of a rear end, loosing 5th gear, riding like a dump truck, wimpy little clutch.

None of these apply to 3rd gens. Except for mine, which has extra springs so it does indeed ride like a dump truck.

Just traded in my '03 duelly. (230,000) Pulled a 40' cargo trailer most of the time. I can't remember mileages of replacement parts, but here is my repair list. Nothing under warrantee! on trade-in the truck is over heating, the fan is not kicking in, and there's a sever oil leak, I think it's the front main seal. Here's what I have replaced. 2-NV-4500, 3-clutchs,3- u-joints, 1- carrier barring, i- drive shaft, 1- lift pump, 1-injection pump,1- turbo, 1- belt tensioner and belt, 1-alternator, 4-rotors, 2- rear callipers, 1-power steering pump, 2- batteries. I do not abuse my trucks, I do put on a lot of miles. I run synthetic oil and change every 5-7000 miles. All in all I still think it's a good truck, after all, I traded it in and bought another

Traded in my 06 because of vibration problems that could not be found. Could not even try the lemon law because of the way the service tickets had been written. It had 37k on it and after many dealer visits and many calls to DC I just had no confidence in it to last. DC's lack of cutomer service changed a 7 time Dodge/Cummins owner to another brand.
