Help Please....A Ford Question

the cackle and knock is a common problem of the powerstrokes (which can now be almost fixed). the cps quits a lot. there sometimes isn't any steering when applying the brakes (although i've never experienced it). those are the most common, but every diesel has at least one common problem out there.

Trasmissions...

... Autos are as bad if not worse than Dodges. I work for the power co. we've got E-40d's and 4r-100s. The 97 has had 4 transmissions in 100k. The new f-550's have had coast clutch problems at under 30k. Wheel studs have broken off. C. P. S. ,I. D. M. s,sway bar bushings, cracked diff. housings, glow plugs and relays, turbo bolts backing out,high-pressure oil galley plugs leaking. I see this stuff because I work on them. All & all they're not bad trucks. Just not any better than Dodge or Chevy. (I work on all three)... . Doug

yeah, basically just drive a few---see what you like. we can give our opinions with some factual info, but only you can decide what you want out of a truck.

I've put 150,000 miles on the 99 psd 350 4x4 six speed that is my utility company work truck. This truck weighs 13,500 lbs every day,it has towed backhoes and seen extensive off road use. One clutch grenaded at 70,000 miles and was replaced with an upgraded unit. That is the sum total of this trrucks problems. I love my Dodge but my experience so far with PSD's is that they build a helluva truck

I just recently finished my paramedic school ride-outs in a near by city. Some of the things I observed were:

A Powerstroke will run 95 mph on the freeway.

It will run 85mph on secondary streets.

You just put the transmission in gear, mash the throttle to about 1K rpm, and let it engage.

All I can say is, I would -never- drive my truck that hard. Gave me quite a respect for the Powerstroke/4R100 combo.
