i have a 2002 that a bearing has let go in the motor i have a 2003 common rail motor and the truck it came out off how hard wud it be to put the 03 motor in the 02 truck has anyone done it or can it be done with out alot of switching and it being a pain

It will be a lot of work to keep the CR part of the motor, but wouldn't be too hard to use the CR short block.

better check and see if your 02 has a crank sensor above the starter... . if not then cr block be somewhat easy swap. too bad you are in pa... i need a 305hp 03 motor and have a 106000 mi 02 motor that i need to sell.

You have to R&R the engine anyway. Why not just repair it and and reinstall it instead of ending up with a ******* truck? The only scenario where this may not be feasible is if you spun a main bearing and ruined the block.

The 03 is a mostly self contained eng - on board ECM and not much of any critical external interfaces. In the early days of third gens there were lots of them sold cheaply on eBay and many of them ended up in first and second gens.
I think the swap is very doable.
OTOH, if emissions testing ever comes to your area you'll be screwed, and as rscurtis said your truck will be an oddball and maybe hard to sell in the future.

Now THAT would make things a whole lot easier. Is it an auto or manual?

Thats close enough that the bus protocols may even be the same from ECU to PCM and\or other controllers. As long as you have the pin outs the hardest part will probably be getting the communications to the cluster working correctly.

Maybe not. A newer engine in an older truck should be just fine. I think the hangup is older engines in newer vehicles... but we don't have emissions so I don't know;)

As said, the CR is completely self contained. The hardest part would be getting the gauges to work, and I'm not even sure how hard that would be.

That's using common sense and there's a shortage of that in govt. .

In Wa. state you must have the original emissions equipment. So if when plug into the diagnostics port and it says anything different from what they expect, it's a fail even if it's in reality, better.

yeah ... I dont think that is right... . Buddy installed a diesel in his 4runner. . passed with no issues. last year I installed a gas motor in an older diesel rabbit years ago. . passed with no issues.

Worst case scenario assuming no check engine light in a OBDII car is they snap test it. I have actually had a OBDI car pass with the light on seeing as there is no emmissions on the OBDI computer...

My advice would be to call and speak to someone at the emmision station but my experiance has been positive there. . even in a 87 Unimog... no OBD, no cig lighter... just a probe in the tail pipe :)

Are you in Wa. State?

In Cali engine swaps can be done but the swapped in pkg must have been available in the same wt class vehicle. be same year or newer and All of the emissions pkg must be installed. When I upgraded my jeep they even checked the vapor cannistor part number
