compas/temp. unit in ceiling of 1998 truck

my temp. readout stopped working the other day and the leters "sc" are now displayed. Any ideas what that means? The compass readout is normal.

My 99 manual says if any portion of the temp sensor circuit fails it will show "SC", short circuit. I believe the sensor is located under the hood near the grille. bg
