Howdy gang,

I'm having a problem with the compass in my truck. It's built in to the overhead console and somehow when I was trying to reset the trip odometer I managed to get the compass dorked up. It used to show N, E, SE, etc. and the outside temperature. It now reads degrees of the compass instead of degrees of temperature. For example if I am going East it reads 90, South 180, etc. I looked through the owners manual and it talked about the variance and calibration so I did both of those but the problem still exists.

Anybody got any ideal on how to get the temp reading back?

Thanks,
Mike

Mikel, Go back to your owners manual. A couple of pages before setting the variance/calibration it tells you how you got your compass to the degrees reading. To get it back, you should just have to press US/M if I remember correctly. Shutting it off should accomplish the same thing. Anyway, it's before the variation/calibration section.

Thanks, I'll give it a try and re-read the manual. I do know that shutting it off (If by 'it' you mean the truck) does not reset this feature since it's been acting this way since sunday... #ad

Not sure on a 99 as this was an undocumented feature. A friend has a 99 and we discovered the "azimuth" mode vs. the "quadrant" mode quite by accident one day. On the 2001. 5 that I have, this feature is documented in the owners manual. To enable, hold the US/M button down for 10 seconds. On mine to return to the default "quadrant" bearings I believe you just do a momentary push on the US/M button. The 99 may be different.

Well I called 2 different "5 Star" dealers, they had no clue how to undo the change that I had made to my compass. But if I brought it in they were sure that they could fix it. Yeah, right. The last time I brought my truck in for something it didn't get fixed and I wound up having to spend more money to undo what some moron at the dealer did that I didn't ask them to.

So, I started messing around with the compass some more myself and here's what I found: If the compass is showing on the overhead comp and you push and hold both buttons for about 5 seconds the compass will switch from reading temperature to reading degrees of the compass (radians?). I didn't see this in my owner's manual anywhere as I looked through it again last night.

Just FYI in case anyone wants to know.
