TS Outlaw Shootout- Roll Call

I am planning for next year's event and I want to add a competition for those that wrench the best. Help me with ideas.

I'm thinking of something like: exhaust system install, turbo removal and installation, etc. Just one thing, but something that has a level of difficulty and doesn't take all day to do.

We would have everyone doing the same thing to the same make of truck. I would love for the shops to get involved, but understand that it would be extremely difficult to get your whole crew to the event. We need a team size limit, according to the task.

I'm also thinking a very nice trophy and $$$$ to the winner. We could even have winner's of Duramax; PowerStroke; Cummins powered vehicles.

Lot's of exciting things for next year!

injector install

exh

clutch

guages

tc and vb R&R

I dunno but that would be real cool to have

btw We have installed injectors in 38 minutes

we timed from when we stopped (truck was hot) the truck till we had it running, we coulda shaved time cuz it started running backwards

Head gasket R&R????????? he he he

make sure you have rules for cleanliness, accuracy and speed.

i would suggest something like an aftermarket accessory install of some type. maybe a group of them. put on a box, boost elbow, change air filter or box and maybe a turbo swap. that sort of thing.

maybe a second class for trouble shooting. stage a problem and let them diagnose it.

sounds like fun.

Most of these kinds of events are trouble shooting events. It might be hard to judge an install because job quality should be factored along with time. I like the idea.

I can do the lift pumps pretty fast. I don't think that is hard enough though. How about a ring and pinion change or an oil pump replacement?

Doc

Three questions.

1) Who's going to donate the trucks?

2) Will those of us who wrench for a living be disqualified?

3) Are air tools allowed?

Sounds like a great idea.

Maybe combine some stuff that you won't need parts for. Tire rotation and valve adjustment for example. Just a thought. (not necessarily a good one :D )

No stupid ideas!

Keep them coming, let's keep brainstorming. Even if you don't want to come to the Nat's next year, help us think here...

Paul- I say let everyone enter to win, amateurs and pros alike. I say hand tools only. I don't think we'll have a problem getting trucks to get add ons. I will work on the details, I just need ideas.

I want it to be related to diesel engines, can be done on all three of the engines offered, and takes some skill, but not for HOURS.

I think on installs, the quality and accuracy will determine speed. Possibly something that includes some welding, wrenching and fab work. I will announce what it is and folks will have time to practice before the event but will have to start from scratch? Just thinking out loud.

I like the idea of trouble shooting too.

Things the average person should be able to do, given a reasonable set of tools:

  • Fastest 12V injector install
  • Fastest 24V injector install
  • Fastest valve spring install
  • Fastest lift pump install
  • Fastest torque plate installation with setting to recommended position.
  • Fastest to adjust AFC (that's currently set to produce black smoke) to yield a slight grey haze
  • Fastest to drill and tap and install an EGT probe

The fastest install/setting gets to keep the installed item (or gets a different prize for an adjustment-only). The runner-up will be the fastest to *remove* the item; he'll get to re-install it and keep it. Big trophy for winner, smaller for runner-up.

FYI I am not racing Brandon on the head gasket race, he has tooooo much pratice. :D I agree mybe injectors or turbo's, something somple so no damage will happen while trying to go fast.

Fast and easy on a DMAX and PSD

The only thing fast and easy on them would be replacing a fuel cap..... ouch - sorry about that... ...

Whatever you choose to do ... each "team" needs to do the same thing ... I really think this is not that great an idea ... a fun idea yes ... doing work for speeds sake is not a proper practice.

Quality workmanship is and always has been my focus. Cleanliness, correctness, quality ... . now that's where the real "competition is ... . not "how fast can I do it"

Is this going to be done on a dirt/gravel/grassy platform or a shop - in a driveway?? I sure would hate to see after the fact - long term problems arise on a truck because short cuts were taken ... .

My two pennies

Eric -

I thought this might be something a bit different from what everyone else has suggested and might be more work than it is worth but here goes.

Have several stock trucks dynoed. Each team then has a baseline. Then each team is given some number of aftermarket accessories like:

BHAF or similar

brand X injectors (not specified)

some sort of fueling box (or plate for 12ers)

exhaust

turbo

The teams can only pick 1/2 the mods and then when everyone is done you dyno again and the largest delta HP under a certain EGT wins! This way you have people that have to do some good wrenching and some good thinking and nothing gets ruined going too fast trying to beat the clock.

Only down fall is that this is probably really expensive! I am sure that there would be ways around that.

whatcha think?

Hmmmm, I like your idea Jason. Among others, lot's of great input. Keith had a great point, I need to research some more and find out if there is a tested and true wrenching competition out there. Keep the ideas flowing.
