Can anyone tell me how to drain the ATF from TC and cooler on a 47RE ? Just got a Mag-Hytec pan and want to change over to synthetic fluid. When I asked around most places just drop the pan and replace the filter and what fluid drains from the pan. One of the quickie oil change places said they have a set up to flush the fluid. ($80) But this doesn't include a filter change. I was told that the filter didn't need to be changed ???? but that they change the pan and filter for $50 !! This seems a bit pricey to me, I'm sure that I could change the filter and pan in less than an hour. Besides I really don't care to have some $5/hr bozo installing my new pan. So how 'bout it, any thoughts, ideas or tips ?
thanks,

Fireman56,

I talked to a local transmission shop about this and they said you could do the same thing at home. All you have to do it hook up a hose to the pressure side (going to the radiator) and have it dump to a 5 gallon bucket. Start the truck and watch the fluid drain out. When the fluid stops coming out shutoff the motor quickly. Attach the hoses and refill.

Hope this helps. .

Or...

Remove the pan, the filter, and crack the screws loose that hold the valvebody in place. Let sit for a while (overnight) and you will get about 10 quarts out.

I pretty much follow what charles said. But I do so in a slightly different manner.

After you pump out the old fluid, drop the pan and change the filter. Refill the system and remove the cooler return line. Drop the line into a container, have someone start the truck and pump out an additional 1 or 2 quarts. This will help push out any remaining old fluid that may have been in the TC and output line.

But again, expect to waste a bit of fresh fluid as it will mix with the old... . Actually its probably 80% fresh/20% residual. Is it worth it??? I'm not sure, but it can't hurt.

Don't forget to refill what you pumped out!!

THANKS

Thanks guys. I'm going to try it this weekend. I think I'll try it all and decide which works best for me.

Thanks :D

Fireman,

Make sure you have a torque wrench if you loosen the VB. It has to be torqued correctly or you may warp it.

thanks Joe

I was aware of the torque on the vb and the sequence, but it is a point well worth mentioning. I've got about 5 torque wrenches, I'm sure one of them will work. The best tool that I have in my box is a DC Shop Manual, I would recomend it for everyone.
