Well, this is a stupid question. But, years ago, an experienced diesel mechanic put my truck on the computer to check some things. One of the results he got from his computer was the compression in each of the cylinders. Is that possible ? I always thought you had to hook an actual compression meter to each cylinder to get a reading.

I believe he was loading you. He might have been taking an educated guess - but a guess none the less. There are no sensors inside there for a computer to read to tell you compression values.

Thanks Bob,

So I guess it at least tells you something. Im guessing that, unless you suspect a compression problem, that is probably a fairly good indicator (?)

There's a diagnostic mode where the tech can deactivate individual cylinders and check the loss of power or exhaust temp or something. I thought it was for identifying a bad injector but it might have other uses.
