Computer question

I got a new computer here and everything is going fine except when I try to go on to some different sites I keep getting this message and don't know how to stop from getting it. What do I have to change to stop this from happening? I am running windows xp.

Here is the message.

Your current security setting prohibit running active x controls on this page. As a result the page may not display correctly.

Thanks Mike

If you go to tools in Internet Explorer then click on Internet options at the top then you should see some tabs across the top. Now Click on security tab then down towards the bottom you should see custom level and another window will open. You then need to scroll down the page in that window and it will say Run Active X controls and Plugins

Truckie,

I would strongly urge you to try out Firefox at www.mozilla.org as a permanent replacement for IE. Firefox does not run ActiveX scripts, which as you can see from below, open you to exploits out the wazoo.

--IE ActiveX Vulnerability Allows Site Content Spoofing

(17 December 2004)

A vulnerability in a default ActiveX control in Internet Explorer could be exploited by phishers It could allow people to display phony web sites with all the appearances of legitimate ones. The flaw affects all versions of IE including fully patched versions of Windows XP with IE 6. 0 and SP2 installed. No patch has been released; users are encouraged to turn off ActiveX or switch the Internet zone security setting to high.

Mozilla Firefox made my computer get a BSOD last night. It has NEVER had a BSOD before. I have nothing against Mozilla, but getting a BSOD is never good.

Oh, sorry - BSOD = Blue Screen of Death

From my own experience, Firefox seems to work slower with Microsoft sponsored sites. There's a BIG lawsuit going on because of this. From the little bit I understand about this - MSFT's sites check your browser and if it isn't IE, it makes the site less usable.

Firefox

I have been using Firefox for a few weeks now and am happy with it so far. I have only been to one site that had any trouble with it. (a photo hosting site)

Using IE and my kid using my laptop, it was a never ending battle cleaning out the spyware from all of the goofy sites teenagers tend to go. So far, using Firefox has all but elimated this problem. Also, there are a number of different themes available to change the look and colors. Two thumbs up!

Thanks for all the info, I now must decipher it all and see what I am going to do.

I made a few changes and so far so good. I will check out some of the stuff you guys listed. Keep the help coming.

Thanks.

Dump the Internet Explorer. I have not tried FireFox on my PC, but found that Netscape Navigator is much, much, much faster and very stable compared to IE on my XP Pro box. And make sure you have some good virus software, I subsribe over the internet to MacAfee, never had a bug yet. But, for 9. 95 a month, I shouldn't.

Thank God for Macs, got the PC to run trucking software, dust it off now and then when I feel self abusive.

If you have a problem with a site using Firefox then you have probably run up against a site with lazy developers. They don't test for anything but IE. If you happen upon a site like this, send the WebMaster an e-mail and take your business elsewhere. Firefox follows international standards for the Web, Internet Exploder does not. The Web sites that don't perform with anything except IE, have 1) lost my business and 2) lost 10% of the persons surfing the Web since 10% of the browsers are not IE.

A neat feature of Firefox is Extensions. If FireFox doesn't do something you think it should, then there is probably an extension that will. Click on Tools | Extensions then Get More Extensions when the next window opens.

While you are at it, you can also dump MS Office products. Surf over to www.openoffice.org for an Office replacement suite that really works. I have been using it for two years. Problems you might have are with macros/Visual Basic.

Good luck!

Most businesses don't have a large staff of web programmers. Getting 90% of the customers to view the page correctly is good for me.
