Most of the time when I click on Internet Explorer I get the big red X and a new window and it says,"

"This Program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down"

I have checked everything. It didn't start till 2 days ago when I downloaded Audio Galaxy and some other crap. I un-installed them and checked my web connections, Lan settings, proxy settings , downloaded IE upgrades, updated & cleaned out the registry. Norton Utilities can't find anything wrong. No viruses detected either.

Everything seems to have slowed down too. Also down in the right hand corner of the IE window "Unknown Zone" comes on first when I go online, then the word Internet replaces it. I never saw the former till a couple days ago.

My provider is Cox@Home Cable access like Kat Diesel.

Any Ideas?

The DAMN warning just popped up again!

I would suggest that you uninstall internet explorer and then reinstall it. My users at work often mess things up by downloading things and this is what we do to fix it.

I hope you are running Windows 98. If so, press the F8 key a bunch of times after the computer beeps when starting up. This will bring up a boot menu. Select "Safe mode command prompt only" This will get you to a C:\ prompt. From here type in the following command

scanreg /restore and hit enter. (there is a space between Scanreg and / )

This will bring up a menu of backup registry files. Select one that has a date before you installed the software. They will be listed by date, so this should be obvious. and choose the restore option. If you get a message stating that the registry was restored sucessfully, reboot the system, and your system will be exactly as it was on the date of the registry file.

Running Windows 95. . Reinstall the OS

Windows 2000... Reinstall the OS.

You may have removed the programs, but the uninstall on these programs leave entries in the registry, and this is why you are getting the error.

The page fault is a memory error where the heart of the OS (the Kernal) isnt getting what it needs, or expected. (this is over-simplified)

Hope this helps.

My suggestion would be to get on the Microsoft website, www.microsoft.com, find their online support site and tell them what your problem is. You will probably need to register the first time and set up a Microsoft Passport. It's worth the hassle. I have turned to them several times and they have always solved my problem. Usually they'll send you a link to a patch or an update. Might take a day or two, but they should be able to help you.

Uninstall/Reinstall IE first

I'm with socal, the first thing I would do would be to download the latest version of IE, uninstall whatever version you are running now and install the latest version that you just downloaded.

If that doesn't help I would try to restore the registry and if that doesn't work looks like its the standard MS repair drill of reloading the OS.

You may also want to take the Netscape product for a test drive.
