Tribal Wisdom (we Need It!)

elk hunting

For the last two months my PC "hangs" or hesitates most of the time when I scroll or click on something; even delays keystroke responses sometimes. My wife can type >100 wpm and I've watched her pound in half a paragraph before it appears on the screen. This has become more than annoying and I would throw the thing into the woods and buy a new one except I don't really want to spend the $$ if this is fixable. (Need a new clutch. :) )

The specs are: AMD-K6 3D+, AT/AT compatible, 392,692 KB RAM. Windows 2000 Pro, Service Pack 4 with all updates current. HD is 6. 0GB, Used - 3. 97, Unused - 2. 03.

I did a defrag successfully. Tried disc cleanup several times and it refuses to do that - just sits there for HOURS saying it's calculating.

Any suggestions/help will be most appreciated. TIA

Sounds like it could be kaza or some other crap. Try spybot search and destroy, it is free and removes and protects you from most of those threats. This is the site, http://www.safer-networking.org download version 1. 3 follow the instructions, it should get rid of any of that stuff.

Have you cleaned the dirt off the processor fins. I have to clean my k6-2 every 6 months, or it will slow down. Heat is bad.

I also have to clean the p4 every month. to keep peak efficiency.

My processors run at full tilt 24/7 - 365 running research

Thanks guys. Finally something new to check.

BTW, Bertram 65 I have McAfee Firewall Plus and VirusScan. Can that kaza stuff or whatever it is get thru that?

Yes it can

I am really happy with the performance of Norton Internet Security (includes virus, firewall, ad blocking, rogue programs, ect. )

While expensive (by my standards), it works well.

As far as heat related slowdown, heat buildup in memory or a proccessor will cause sporatic restarts, in hardrives it causes disk read write errors and page faults. Kaza and stuff like it is not a virus and runs on known ports, it is very difficult to block with firewalls and anti-virus software.

Thanks B65. BTW, sometime when you have a minute I'd be interested in how you came up with your handle, if you're inclined to divulge that story. Let me guess... ummm :)

I took advantage of the link to spybot and tried it out.

Thanks for the link.

Only found a few :

Most of this is from when my wife gets on the 'puter and downloads whatever with no regard for what it is.

I'll keep spybot standing by.
