One thing I'll say is these blasted electronic gizmo's are not my strong point. Mine is screwed up now to the point where my answer is my Rail gun and about 1000yds BUT,since I will need it to last a bit, I will ask for a hand from our resident computer experts. I know this is a old system but with recent events it will have to be patched up and my new one will be put on hold till things around here fall the way they need to.

So here we go,the short version I hope...

The system is a old P3 450 with 1g of ram and a 40g hard drive that has only 7g used. It had Norton Anti-Virus 2002 and with it not supported by them and my subscription expiring I called and chatted with one of their "experts" and then the crapola hit the fan. I upgraded to Norton Internet Securities 2004 Professional and was told by them it would overwrite the old program and it did not need deleted. Did the download and started the program, registered it and then POOF we have huge problems. I was running at 80% free system resources before this was done and now I barely have 25% at its best. It has greatly affected the speed of operation and due to it the only Internet access I have is my IE6 and thats only till the computer slows down and will not let it operate. I have gone thru and deactivated some of my running start up programs and it has helped. Anyone got any ideas, short of shooting it, or disabling the Norton I can do to help this mess.

To say I am more than steamed is a understatement. Symantec charges you for their product and then IF you have a problem they whack you again for the call to the "tech man" no matter if you just purchased it or not. Any help is appreciated... ... ... . Andy

One question. Are you running windows XP also?

If so, I know what happened. Symantec screwed something up in the live-update software that has really screwed a lot of their programs up. If you are running xp, send me a PM and I'll loof for where I put the solution.

John...

Sorry I got frustrated with it,so I left to run a errand to Jetpilot's for something truck related.

I am not running XP, as I see now I forgot to add what OS I have,Its Windows ME. The graphics card in this system I have will not update to XP as it does not support it and has no drivers availabe for the upgrade.

I just home from Dougs and on this boot it was at 61% free and now at this time its down to 39% in about 20 minutes time.

These are what programs are running now(ctrl-alt-delete method)... .

Explorer

Cftmon

Ccapp

Wuauboot

Wkcalrem

Loadqm

InstantAccess

DirectCD

Xwmsapi

Atiptaaa

Systray

Winmgmt

Mdm

Nprotect

Agrsmmsg

Wkufind

Thanks for answering me John..... Andy

Andy, Windows ME has a bug in it that when you open and close stuff not all the resources are freed up. So if you are opening programs and then closing them you are slowly but surely using up your resources. I missed in my PM to ya last night that you were using ME. Threre is no fix for this bug except upgrading to a newer version of windows.

I feel for you. This is why I no longer will buy anything from Symantic. I've been burn't by them a couple of times. I've found their software usually causes more problems than it cures, and have heard horror stories from friends who use their stuff. McAfee sucks too. They used to be really good, but are now almost as bad as Symantic. Good Luck.

After extensive testing, at a large firm with over 20k computers and 1k servers in the field that we had to support, we went with Trend Micro anti-virus. Junk your current anti-virus, download other browsers and try them out, and buy Trend.

Hammer, you might be able to upgrade to Win2000 Pro. The processor and ram meet the requirements.

Or you could reinstall ME. Which you should do every 6 months anyway... ... ... ...

DEFRAG your harddrive a couple times a month if you use it everyday.

Download Ad-Aware 6. 0 its free and it works everytime you use it hit the update, they update at least once a week. With your processor you may need to let it run overnight. It should delete that virus you downloaded.

What virus??? he says to himself... ... ... ... .

As far as all of those processes running in the background.

Atiptaaa clearly sounds like your ATI video card. But it might be able to be shut off.

Systray needs to kept on

CtfMon can be ended

Wuauboot-> Windows Me's update thingee

Loadqm-> MSN Queue Manager Loader, a service that is installed with MSN Explorer and MSN Messenger. It can use a lot of system resources.

CTFMON-> A service that handles the Alternative User Input Text Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar. It provides text input support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies. Something tells me you can end this process.

VIRUS ALERT BRO... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

InstantAccess Dialer... ... . InstantAccess is a dialer that gives a user access to premium services of a third-party Web site, by dialing a high cost number using a modem.

DirectCD... . Background task included with Easy CD Creator that allows you to use CDs and DVDs formatted with DirectCD. If you aren't burning CD's no sense having it running in the background. I'm sure its eating resources.

Ccapp-> Associated with Norton AntiVirus 2003, which runs auto-protect and email checking facilities. Without this service, both facilities cannot function correctly.

Xwmsapi-> looks like an IBM printer thingee. You should be able to end that process.

Winmgmt-> Windows Management Instrumentation from Microsoft that allows you to write scripts for the management of devices, user accounts, services, networking,

Mdm-> Machine Debug Manager is used for debugging applications by technically advanced users and developers and is installed by the Microsoft Script Editor that is included in Microsoft Office.

Nprotect-> could be a Norton thingee could be adware??

Agrsmmsg-> It is a part of the AMR modem driver.

Wkufind-> Update detector for Microsoft Works 2002 PictureIt. If the detector is enabled, it tries to dial your Internet service provider, connect to the Internet, and download any updates available. If you are not using Pictureit you can end this process.
