I'm finally getting my new shop built and need to know what you guys do to seal the concrete floor. I'm getting it finished so that the surface is smooth and dense, but I don't want oil to get into it and stain it. I have seen really nice finishes, but they don't stand up well to hot tires and floor jacks and creepers. Is there something out there that any of you guys are using that will stand up to spills and wheeled shop equipment without coming loose or chipping. I appreciate the comments and help here, thanks...

At one of the power plants I worked at we painted the floors with Coronando 2 part epoxy 10 years ago and it still looks good and thats with minor forklift traffic, vehicles, and 30 ton turbine parts being set on it. Back then it was $50 a gallon for the paint and $50 a gallon for the primer, if you mixed a 5 gallon pail you had about 30 minutes to get it down.

The original owner of my house painted the garage floor with something and now when it's wet it comes off, almost like finger paints  I need to figure out how to get that off so I can paint it with something good. I've got to see if the old power plant still has some of the Coranado on the shelf and if it's anygood now from sitting.

i had very good luck with sherwin-willams tile-clad

paint. i think it was about 100. 00 to do 500 sq. feet

i am happy with it .

My Dad's garage/shop is just polished concrete. We built it back in 90 or 91 and there's been tons of oil, ATF, etc on that floor. Still looks brand new. It just wipes up for the most part, and if there's anything left behind a little Simple green and a rag cleans it right up.

I did my shop with the epoxy paint from u-coat it. It has been on for a year now, no chips, flakes, or cracks. No stains, cleans very easily.

I retired from concrete coating business and highly recomment Pittsburg 2 part epoxy paint. I coated my 1600 sg. ft. concrete floor ten years ago and have had no problems. Mix 10 percent pool acid with 90 percent water, let it soak 30 minutes and rent a good 3,000 PSI pressure washer and do a good close detailed pressure wash, rinse with lots of clean water and let it dry reaaaal good and apply the epoxy paint.

In our plant we used epoxy on the floor and some of the equipment as well and it almost looks the same as it did 10yrs ago. Might be a little more expensive, but I think it was well worth it.

you have peaked my intrest do you have any pictures?

I used Rustoleum's two part epoxy with sprinkles, available from Home Depot. It lasted really well and prevented oil spots. Regardless of what product used, poor floor preparation is a guarantee for failure.

I'm not sure what I'm going to use on my new shop. I've got a few weeks to decide so keep the recommendations coming! Thanks.

RE: Epoxy floor paint

I looked in to what was the best floor paint. I do a lot of business with equipment shops truck shops etc. They told me who to buy the product from and so we used it on our new shop floors. This product is amazing and I would highly recommend it to any one. I will have to look up the name and phone number but will be glad to do it for you if your interested. I'm looking for a concrete sealer. I don't think epoxy would hold up very well to welding splatters. Anyone have a good recommendation for concrete sealer?

I work with a chemical company in CA, i get this question a lot. The best bet is to use an epoxy floor coat. Brand isn't too specific. The best way to make it stick hard, is to prep the floor with an acid. Doing this will "etch" the concrete allowing the epoxy to grip.

Home Depot had a special on their in home contractor svcs. The company that came out Mechanicly abraded my floor (Leveling it) etched it and laid down the base epoxy. The next day they came out and laid the Bonding epoxy and dumped the vynil flek on. Four hours later they had this cool vacu-shovel that took up all the loose and unbonded vynyl. Then the nasty top coat was laid on ... and thick. It actually got hot as it had a reaction with the flecky stuff and is an interlocked system. I have dropped my 24" pipe wrench on the floor and not a chip. The Mustang leaves lil Brake fluid gifts for me and has sat there for weeks . . no harm just wiped up. The one ***** I do have is that it gets slick as heck when wet.
