One of the trucks I help take care of is a 98 12 valve short bed 4 x 4 with automatic transmission. This truck has slightly over 100K miles.

When the transmission selector is placed into drive, the transmission sometimes cannot make up its mind whether to start in first or second gear. It hunts back and forth for a gear to use. If the 1st is selected with the shift lever, and athe transmission is manually shifted, everything works fine.

The problem happens mostly when the truck is cold and has just been started and has not fully warmed up. The local dealers have not been able to determine what is going on.

If any of you have dealt with this before, let me know.

Thanks.

Harry

Have you tried to let it idle in neutral for a few seconds (~30) before putting the truck in Drive. It doesn't sound like TC drainback, but it's worth the try.

I'm with Cooker... . although I'm pretty sure my TC isn't draining back... putting her into Neutral and letting it idle for a few minutes sure does seem to help out. This could be psychological on my part though... .

Matt - If be believe with enough conviction that something is as we view it, than we will be 'convinced' that it is exactly as such.

Hi Harry,

My 98 auto does the same thing. Always has. I remember reading that the transmission automatically (get it?) starts from second gear when it is cold. Out of my driveway I have to pull into a busy street. I generally shift manually to get up to speed quickly. Otherwise I would probably get biffed by some Volvo Cross Country driving moron jabbering on his cell phone and drinking his Starbucks latte who is too important to slow down for a hard working blue collar guy like myself.

In any case, I have about 95,000 miles on the truck and the transmission is as good (or bad) as it ever was. No apparent effect from the shifting.

Hope this helps
