What exhaust should I purchase for my 06 4x4 5. 9 Cummins/auto. Edge Juice w/ attitude, Airaid intake. The more I shop the more confused I get. Cat Back or Turbo Back? Banks, MBRP, Magnaflow, Flow Master. Please shed some experienced light here.

Unless you just want to replace the whole exhaust or most of it then all you need is a high flow muffler replacement kit. The 06 trucks have 4" exhaust as it is. You can get a muffler kit from MBRP for a lot less money than a full kit. You might also want to add a 5" or 6" tip to finish the look as well.

I'm going to change the muffler only. I have a air turbine muffler now sitting in garage, but I heard they are a little loud. Might just get a MBRP muffler

I have a cat delete pipe with a banks monster (4"). I'm happy with the sound and perfromance with this set-up. I have one friend with a donaldson 5" (very throaty, somewhat loud, but nice tone). Another friend has a donaldson 4" (throaty, not as loud as the 5", tone good but not quite as good as the 5"). Finally have a buddy with the mbrp 4" that seems to be almost as loud as the donaldson 5" with the same agressive tone. You really can't go wrong with any of them. I personally thought the aeroturbine didn't sound very good when I had it on my truck. Too loud, too airy sounding.

bblansett,

If you want a 5 inch or duals or something like that go for it. If you want a 4 inch system the stock pipes on the 2004. 5+ trucks are already 4 inch. The problem is the muffler and the cat (depending on the HP you plan to add) !!

Get an AFE or MBRP "specific" Dodge replacement muffler and a cat pipe (if you want) and you'll have a turbo back 4 inch system. If you have a Mega Cab the AFE installs the best with no mods, the MBRP has to have the hangers changed on a Mega!! You didn't say in your post what body style you had etc.

Does it really benefit the performance to go to a 5" system? I wondered about that when I bought my Banks 4" and deleted the cat on my '06. Incidentally I like the sound of the Banks 4" muffler, but not as much as I liked it straight piped. JH

I agree! Against my advice,a friend with an '05 junked his stock exhaust and we replaced it with a Magnaflow 5" stainless turbo back. It is a very nice quality exhaust but he could not detect any reduction in EGT's or increase in power even with Edge Juice set on 60hp. He's been quoted $1500. 00 for a 5" cat. if Ca starts smogging light diesel trucks.

Magnaflow 5" Turbo-Back Stainless Steel #15989 on my little 305/555 CTD... ... ..... should bolt up perfectly to the II SPS62/12 later on down the road. :-laf

The Banks muffler definitely is not "bolt on". (I doubt if any of them are). You need to weld the Banks muffler in, and at that time it is easy to remove the cat and weld in a length of stainless tubing to fill the gap. JH

banks muffler is not anything like the sound of the stock exhaust system with the cat in place. however, It is one of the quieter systems I've heard on a 3rd gen.

I have a 04. 5 Could any one tell me what the exhaust would sound like if I left the cat and put a piece of straight pipe instead of a muffler?

Can't tell you about the sound of the straight pipe with the cat, because I straight-piped all the way at first. It sounded great!! However my truck gets a lot of use where the straight-pipe was not acceptable, so I opted for the Banks 4" and left the cat off. Better sounding than stock, but I think someday I will go back to straight-piped. JH
