So my 04 On occasion will have a bit of a tick tick tick noise at mid rpms when not pulling the load hard. Step on it and the tick goes away. This is not a loud tick. . I overheard someone describe this as being from the high pressure fuel pump, being a 3 cylinder and the engine 6 causes a some rpms out of faze condituon thus a gear clack or the tick. Has anyone rephased the pump and had sucess?

If it is actually out of phase the noise will be constant, not occasional. The rattle while driving is more likely injectors or a bearing on one of the accessories drives. Could even be in the exhaust system.

The noise has been constant from the time the truck was new. I just changed injectors, all bearings on the front drive (Alt,water, idler, fan hub and clutch) the exhaust is tight the turbo is new.

You can try rephasing the CP-3 and see if it makes a difference. Some notice a lot, on mine it was minimal when I reset it so it was close.

I assume that you just remove the pump and rotate the driven gear forward or backward a few teeth? Does the pump have a o-ring seal?

No, pull the plug from the front of the timing cover so you can pop the drive gear loose on the CP-3 drive. Rotate engine 60 degrees, tighten drive gear and assess noise level. If you find no difference after 3 times then the CP-3 is not the problem.

bracket under the exhaust manifold, mine came loose and made a ticking noise. from in side the truck it sounded like it was coming from around the turbo

When you say "3 times" do you mean to say that each time rotate the engine 60 degrees each time (i.e. totaling 180 degrees after "3 times.")

My 2005 had a intermittent tick, it went away after the #4 fuel line was replaced. I think it was from the clamp being loose from the line

Interesting, will have a look on mine, ticks also with medium load and middle rpm.
Thought it is just the common injector rattle.

I have what I believe to be injector rattle on my 03 with 50hp bosch motorsports injectors. It mostly occurs around 2000 to 2200 rpms which is right in the interstate cruising range for me. I was going to try some 2 cycle oil to see if it helped, but it sounds like I need to go back and check all my injector lines first. I'm pretty sure they are all stock with 260k. I don't carry a spare #4 line, but I do have a fuel rail cap in the glovebox just in case.

If it is just the pump out of phase will it hurt anything? My 06 is doing the ticking noise too and its driving my crazy!
